George's World Travels
I know I havent put up any postcards in quite a while sorry. But have kept up to date with my photos.
The orphanage ones have been up there a few days. It was my last day on Thursday. Although Im glad not to have to do the actual work which was demanding especially as none of the workers there spoke any English, I really was very sad to leave the kids. Is so strange to go from them being a big part of my life, seeing them 5 times a week to nothing, ever again. I was especially sad to leave certain kids, who Ive become quite attached to. At least one of them is going to America soon, as shes being adopted by a family out there. But for the others, who knows what will happen to them. When you see things like this, the hopelessness of it all, you wonder why more people arent adopting. A family could give so much, a whole life really to any of these kids. It seems to me to be the best thing you could possibly do for somebody.
On to happier things. The trip to the old capital from Friday to Saturday was good. Have just got back. Lots of driving, so quite tired! 6 hours each way. Also we ran out of petrol this morning after only 20 mins on the road and so we had to wait in a cafe for the following 2 hours while the driver found some more. Not fun!!
As you can see from the picture, we went to a very old monastry. The oldest and most important in Mongolia. I forget the name now, I know Im useless! Will bring my book sometime and add it in. Anyway was interesting to see, Ive gone to a lot of monasterys in UB, all very good, but none with this kind of history, so that was nice.
There was loads of little things you could buy there too (see pics) so we all got some more goodies.
We also went to see 'Phallic Rock' and 'Vaginal Slope' they were listed in the guide book so we thought theyd be quite impressive. But sadly the rock was really small and for ages we kept thinking this was just a smaller replica and almost demanded to drive over the next hill. The slope, to be fair was pretty good. You have to see the pictures!
We stayed in a ger on Friday night. Bloody freezing. Tugi didnt bring enough sleeping bags so we had to share. Meryl and I had blankets over us too but they fell off as the night wore on and when the fire burned out was so so so cold! Think was like -10 outside, so not much warmer in the ger really! worst nights sleep Ive had for ages! At least tonight Ill have my warm sofa bed back.
While we were driving Jack made Meryl and I a bracelet with the threads he brought with him. Im building up quite a collection of bracelets now :)
Tomorrow were all meeting for lunch at chez bernards and doing some shopping. Am giving my bag (thats going to go back to UK, with skates, warm clothes and souvenirs in) to Tugi on Monday morning so have to do last minute stuff tomorrow.
On Monday Rachels gonna redo my braids, so we're having a wine night. Watching movies, having a nice dinner, and yes lots of red wine. Am seriously looking forward to it, especially as I wont have to work at the orphanage the next day so dont have to worry about an early start. (Even very slight hangovers and the orphanage do NOT mix well!)
Hope youre all well,
Carry on posting messages!
