OK, so i know i missed out a day but it was for good reason. As you know if you have read my previous blog i have been having issues with my knee, well yesterday's ride was the ride from hell… I had decided to dope myself up with some painkillers and some ibuprofen gel but this didn't really manage to get rid of the pain. I pushed as far as I could go but as I got to Aviemore I stopped for a pint of squash at a pub and realised I could barely walk. I had a tough decision to make… do I push on and possibly damage my knee further or do i stop 20 miles short of my planned stop?
Well unsurprisingly I decided to stop. This really sucked as I had no accommodation booked and was a little disorientated and distracted by the pain L Eventually found a hotel that had a bath and after a swift stop off at the pharmacy and some better anti-inflammatory gel and painkillers I found myself in bed after a nice hot bath and pain relief J
As for today….. This morning I decided to be healthy and had some fruit juice and some scrambled egg on toast (ok healthier) I headed off for my next target of Pitlochry.
Today was and amazing day. It started off with heading out into the hills in the pouring rain. This didn't dampen my spirits because as it rained heavier and heavier I just put my waterproof overshoes on and got on with it. I was thinking of putting my waterproof jacket on but it was really hot anyway so I didn't want to end up overheating so I thought I'd just leave it as I was.
Sure enough the sun came out in the latter half of the afternoon as I found an old road that ran next to the A9 for what seemed like a good 10 miles or so. This was the old main road that was now a cycle path / access road. This meant that it was superbly quiet and allowed me to use the whole road to my heart's content!!
I arrived in Pitlochry with no pain and no idea where to stay. Thankfully when we arrived in the centre of town there was a hotel right in the centre. They let us keep the bikes in the reception office so that they were safe… good going I thought!
Tomorrow morning dad is catching the train back home, and I will be continuing my ride south towards Lands End. Cycling alone will be interesting but I think I'll just have to remember to pace myself and not get carried away into pushing too far or too quickly.
We shall see….
