Wow ok,
what a day! we left the B&B in Thurso at arroubnd 8 after a fried breakfast... the breakfast of champions! we then loaded the bikes up and headded off to JOG. The Starting point greeted us with light rain... the kind of rain that doesn't make you wet just really really annoys you!
We tried to get a photo at the historic signpost but sadly the chap that takes the photos was missing and he had taken the signs down too!!! that was a massive dissapointment but we took a photo there and a photo at a sign on the wall. I also got my transit form stamped and signed.
We started off well and quickly got the first 15 miles down. It felt too easy. We had the wind behind us and started steady. but then as we reached Wick, the wind changed... it started blowing more in our faces so it slowed us down emencely. The hills got worse and when we reached Berridale i broke. There was a fantastic downhill followed by an incredible uphill! the slope was 13% in each direction.....i suffered for the rest of the ride.
The last 10 miles dragged on... with no obvious landmarks i quickly got confused where i was and how far it was to Helmsdale where i would end my day. Then as i nearly gave up all hope there was a massive downhill... Surely this means annother uphill...
NOPE!!!! that was it for the day. As i rode into Helmsdale a HUGE smile crossed my face. I had managed my first day. From here on it can only get better..... can't it?

Sarah 1st day down! We're all thinking of you everyday you're out there! Keep it up! We took nicks car for a little trip to Bristol! Kim is looking after it while they are away... A small surprise for them when they get back!
Trevor you know that in the army they have a saying "Every up hill there is a down hill to follow, but thats shortly followed by another up hill" and your in scotland mate lots of those hills. but keep going it will get better as you come south.
Steve Wrench Great start Geoff. Long way to go, but there are so many people following you and you'll get lots of encouragement I'm sure. See you in Exeter soon!
