We've been out of Wifi reach for the last few days so it's catch up time. Surprisingly France really isn't up with the play with wifi and so it has been quite difficult at times to write our blog, for Brodie to do mathletics and to just look things up on the Internet.
Rocamadour really was a wonderful stop and we all came away with little souvenirs such as the children's leather bracelets with their names on them and me with my pottery coffee cup, fingers crossed it makes the trip home in on piece!
From Rocomadour we headed to les Gauffres de Padirac, just a short 15 minute drive. It's funny how places bring back memories it must be at least forty years since I was there with the family and I have vivid memories off the caves and being there in particular with Tina. Although a little intimidated initially with the dramatic descent into the hole the kids really enjoyed the wander through the caves and the boat ride, we got a great photo of us all in the boat courtesy of the tourist photographer.
Just an hour south from the caves we found our little house in the woods. Such a very cool place to chill out with country walks and enjoy the beautiful swimming pool. The scenery here is nothing more than magnificent. You have the impression of walking in gently rolling country side and then all of a sudden you come across these enormous cliffs with a river, the Lot, winding between them.
This is the area renowned for Foie Gras, products made with walnuts such as cake and liqueur and goats cheese. Rocomadour, in particular is famous for it's goats cheese which I had to buy and hence stunk the bathroom out with it until I could eat it for breakfast. I have definitely had my fill of chèvre and am now onto Comte and Brie.
Our little house in the woods was so cosy and relaxing the guys just wanted to hang there so I disappeared off to the local chateau of Cenevieres where I met the 85 year old owner who proceeded to tell me the entire family history of the chateau before other tourists arrived for the guided tour. Amazing to see a chateau built in 800 and then another story added in 1300 to change it from a fortified castle to a renaissance chateau of relative luxury.
Back home to catch up with the rest of the family for lunch and then onto Cirq de Lapopie, renowned as one of the most beautiful villages in France, for the afternoon. Again such amazing scenery and a beautiful wee village to discover through its meandering lanes. The village has been built along a cliff edge like Rocamadour with stunning scenery and beautiful buildings. It is full of artisanal shops and although rather touristy it has a charm all of its own.
