Jonny got his dream, with one day with nothing planned Jonny was desperate to search out mountains so here we are in Chamonix! It really is like being in a different country, more like Switzerland rather than France with incredible mountain vistas, glaciers that look like they are ready to fall onto the town and chalets just like in the film Heidi. With all the mountains, pine trees and the pedestrian township it's a little like Queenstown but much bigger.
We arrived just after 1pm and so after running around searching for a hotel room we found the quaintest we chalet just for us attached to the hotel Les Cretes Blanches. It's like little red riding hoods cabin in the woods except it's down a wee lane just off the Main Street. We have actually been very lucky as there is a big marathon race in Chamonix this weekend and so accomodation will be very scarce from tomorrow onwards. Our trip has been like this all the way, everything working out just the way it needs to without any hassles - synchronisity at its best!
Accommodation found we set off to ride the cable car to the top of Mont Blanc. In one day we have gone from 30 degrees by the pool to minus 5 at the top off a 4800m mountain - freezing! Unfortunately the view at the top was clouded in but we did get to go in a cave in the glacier. The cable car was quite daunting both for the speed it climbed and descended as well as the perpendicular drop you viewed as you climbed, especially as it swung on the pilots, we did get some great views below the clouds of the glacier and villages below.
Dinner was a trip down memory lane (when Monique served Mum, Dad and Me Raclette many years ago) so with kids happy with pizza and spaghetti bologna use, Jonny and I tucked into Raclette - baked potatoes, different hams and melted cheese - the French version of fondue. Great dinner but totally bloated afterwards, definitely a meal to be enjoyed once every so often rather than on a regular basis! I am so going to run some very long distances when I get home to work off all this food! As like most days, the kids finished off their meals by running off to the local glacier for their favourite sorbets.
Off to Paris tomorrow for our final 2 days before flying home on Friday.
