Day 29: We leave the Fitzroy River, slowly, with the caravan intact! It was a tad touch and go, but she made it out.
We arrive in Derby quite early, so we set up the van, and then head to the main attractions in town.
We visit an old gaol that was built specifically for housing Aboriginals awaiting trial, and read of the horrors they went through at the hands of white people...very moving. A good learning opportunity for the older boys as well, especially as they are yet to learn about those parts of Australia's history.
We move on and visit a boab prison and Frostys Pool. We then visit the Mowamjam Art Centre and are blown away by the amazing paintings of Windjana.
Windjana is the spirit (or God) of the Aborigines in the West Kimberley region (3 tribes actually). And they all live in and around Derby because they were forced there after they were moved from there homelands way out in the Kimberley. But they still have their Windjana and instead of painting him in caves they paint on canvas at this awesome art centre. And they are absolutely beautiful and amazing. A must do!
We head back to the park and then head to see the sunset at the Derby Jetty. Derby has the second biggest tides in the world (up to 11m), and we get to see it rushing out. The boys are hoping to see a croc, but they are disappointed (unlike the adults!) but they hunt for mud skippers on the tidal shore, away from the waters edge!
After dinner we have an excellent night with Bruce and Annie, and our Neighbours, Malcolm and Jacqui. We party on until 11.30!
Tomorrow we head up the famous Gibb River Rd. How exciting.
