Day 26: The day has arrived! I am up and raring to go at 5.35am.
The boys don't know where we are going, but when the bus pulls up at the front of the caravan park, with 'Horizontal Falls Seaplane Adventures' painted on the side, it becomes pretty obvious.
We pick up a few other passengers, including our 'new' friends, Bruce and Annie, and we head to the airport. We even have a partial eclipse as a special extra!
First time the boys have been on a plane, and it's a little beauty. A 14-seater sea plane.
We soar to 2000 feet and the land and everything on it becomes tiny. It's a one hour wonder flight...unreal. When we cross King Sound, it's just beautiful!
We land on gorgeous turquoise waters, and tie up to a pontoon and house boat. Breakfast is served!
After cereal and a bacon and egg roll, most of us hit the shark cage. It is already hot, so we are keen to cool off. We are swimming (with a fence in between) with heaps of Tawny Sharks, one Bull Shark and the biggest Groper you have ever seen! Adrian (our skipper), reckons he weighs about 300kgs...he was massive. Unfortunately, and as enticing as it looks, we cannot swim in any open water. Between the sharks and salties, you wouldn't stand a chance in the water up here...not that we've seen a wild salty yet. But who wants to risk it? Ahhhh...not I.
We don't even bother drying off, and we board the fast boat that will take us to the famous Horizontal Falls.
And wow! A.M.A.Z.I.N.G! The power in the water moving through these gaps...up to 1,000,000L a second!!!
There are two gaps, one 20m, the other 10m, and we zoom through the swirling, rushing waters roaring through the widest gap. Awesome. Like a ride at a theme park.
Adrian takes us to the smaller gap, but he has to make the call that it's too dangerous for us to go through. The tides will be at their highest today, 30-45 mins after we leave...9.30m. Adrian's 10 years of experience help us to respect his decision.
After the falls, we get straight back on the plane and head for Cape Leveque. We cross the magnificent Buccaneer Archipelago, the most beautiful coastal area, particularly from the air. What an opportunity!
We arrive at the Kooljaman Resort for a lovely barramundi lunch and a refreshing swim in the Timor Sea. No crocs here...
We board the 4WD bus for the journey back to Broome...88kms of the worst dirt road I think...ever! We were thinking of going to Cape Leveque with the tents, but the drive back today helps with our decision...ahhhh, no.
We get back on dark, eat hotdogs for dinner and basically fall into bed exhausted. What a great day! We practically had to remortgage the house for this tour, but it was worth it!
