Awoke when the loudspeaker announced the arrival of the coaches to take people on the tour of Amsterdam (8:30). As we already spent four days in the city, we decided to spend the morning having a leisurely breakfast (my crazy coffee thing) and establishing a morning routine. I noticed that there might be a possibility of a massage, and eagerly made an appointment for this morning! The massage goddess worked her magic. We had lunch with a terrific couple from New Mexico. of course we started talking about travel, food, and favorite recipes – and when joey brought up in his Puerto Rican eggnog recipe after she started explaining her Jamaican rum punch competition, she said wait - I want to write down your Puerto Rican eggnog recipe. Then she explained that she was dyslexic, so it might take her a bit of time to write down the recipe and we said why don't you dictate it? And she looked at me like - what? So we explained how to use her iPhone a little better and she got so excited! Then went up top to cruise past seep, cows, horses and beautiful pastures on the way to Cologne. A bit later we headed to the locks. When we started the cruise I had no idea that they were locks on the Rhine River. So we have side-by-side locks, and the one on the left is the new one. The old on the right was built in the 1950s; the new on the left built more recently and the new lock cuts the distance between Amsterdam and Cologne almost in half. It also controls flooding. The water raises and lowers by valves, controlled by some sort of a master lever. Joey will have more specific pictures from outside. This particular time, we are below the waterline on the other side of the lock, so they are raising the water on our side of the lock; when the water is at the appropriate level, they open the gate and we go through. Dinner was lamb and scalloped potatoes. Water lapping at the windows. After dinner we had dancing! No pix available...
