So. I finally am sitting down with Joey to hear about their adventures while Lillie and I were shopping...
"We started out with a quarter mile walk to the Colosseum, led by Giovanni, our tour guide. He was a history teacher ... with his help, we passed the hour-long line and waited in a 10 minute long line to enter. Once we stepped in, the information continued pouring forth - the extent of his knowledge is mind-boggling. The ability to see the Colosseum thru his eyes shed a new light to the information we thought we knew of the Colosseum. Every angle of the Colosseum was explained in depth and the use of the slaves for maintaining the Colosseum was fascinating. The ability to photograph and understand the actual structure and how they maintained the structured for thousands of years was incredible." (If you want pix, you'll have to wait for Joey to get back home to download and edit. Vicki - typist) "The day included hundreds of photos. After leaving the Colosseum we walked to the ancient city center of town where the remains of the structures of the previous city had been excavated. At that point, Giovanni took us to the spot where we could see the tops of 6 churches - the churches remained only because they were churches. The remaining buildings were demolished and other structures built on top of them. That's why there are only occasional pillars and partial walls. He explained how the different religious groups established each of the churches and were eventually recovered by the Catholics.
