Im having a really good time here in Christchurch. Ive been here for 3 nights now, I think I have 2 nights left before Im going off on the Kiwi experience.
Everything kind of works by the amount of nights im in a place. I can never work out the day of the week and how long im staying. couldnt work out how long id been here last night!! Everything is always on a short term basis, im booking my hostel night by night. tonight will be my fourth night here.
my first night in Christchurch was just spent chilling out, i took a walk down to the botanical gardens with a new friend ive met and when we returned chilled out with some other new arrivals. Its got a nice tmosphere here. on my first day there was actually a small group of us that took a long wonder round the streets and gardens of Christchurch. its so good to hang out with some people for more than a few hours!! We took a gondola to the top of a big hill in the afternoon and checked out the view...even though we were half in the clouds you could see the sea and some gorgeous greeny blue lakes!
my second night was a friday...oh what fun! probably my first night out to a bar since i left america! found a $5 cocktail bar then headed to an irish bar wth a live band. was a really fun night and didnt must have got back about 2 i think :-s
on my second day i took a bus to New Brighton beach (nothing like Brighton...it did have a beach and pier although the beach was sand and the pier had no aracdes on!). Its the first time ive seen a beach break since the USA and it was certainly great to see some people surfing in the messy waves. Of course you had to buy an icecream and eat it on the pier with the wind in your hair, so i did! it was deliecious. That evening, we had heard of a concert going on in the park. we didnt realise how big it was...it was a similar atmosphere to when we used to go last night of the proms with all the watchfield crowd and set up a picnic and listen to the music. instead of opera tho it was christmas carols!! it was absolutely lovely, tonnes and tonnes of people there a massive stage and of course santa came! he came down the center isle of people with 2 gig rowing boats. the one in front had life guards "rowing" with oars then a rope attaching the second boat with santa in. was the funniest thing ever. its difficult to explain. photos will be alot clearer.
they ended the evening with an excellent firework display and of course lots of ohs and ahs and then the mad rush to get out the park at the same time...CHAOS! it was defintely a unique experience of christchurch.
i think thats all now up to date. im back in my cheap internet cafe writing away, heading off into the centre again in a minute to check out a market that is apparently running...not entirely sure tho, ill soon find out.
speak to you soon xxxxx
