Hi all,
ive had the last four days off and ive been a busy bee in those days. My frfiend and I hired a car and drove down to the south coast. It was so good to get out of Queenstown after one month of being in the same place. We hired a small automatice hyundai getz. Being automatic was definetely new for me i kept n going to the gear stick to change gear...oops! ITS AUTOMATIC! by the end i think i just about go the hang of it, im still very pro manual cars! the girl i went with Mathilda drove most of the first leg down to Invercargill a small city near the south coast. Its a very spaced out city, we both didnt like it too much. We drove onto the Catlins; a protected land area on the coast. By this time i was doing the driving...Matilda isnt the most confident driver and successfully made me very nervous especially when she kept turning onto the wrong side of the road!
The Catlins is a beauriful beautiful place and we made many stops on the way with small walks to points of interest. it was so good to see the sea again, i have really missed it. at some points the sea was turqoise blue.
our first night we stayed in Waikawa in a tiny 8person hostel. it was very cute and a chilled out night. we had been to the nearby bay in the day and seen dolphins, and penguins aswell as seals and many bird life.
the Second day we continued along the coastline, passing cove after cove. we gave a young german couple a life to Cathedral caves (amasing caves cut into the cliffs, which are very deep and dark...your able to walk into them...i successfully scared matilda witless!). we left them there and headed inland to McCleen falls which were gorgeous. we werent so lucky with the weather today, it rained most of the day but it made the falls that much better. We eventually made our weay up to duneding arriving about 6ish.
we stayed in a really central hostel, which was really modern and also cheap. we met a few people there and headed out for a drink in the eveniing but because it is mainly a university town and they are on holiday right now it was real quiet. I was in bed by 11 after doing nearly all the driving i was shattered!
the next morning we headed to te cadbury chocolate factory and went on a tour of the place...lots of free chocolate bars and some interesting facts...cant think of one right now! we had coffee in a cute cafe just off the main square (octagon) before headfing the to steepest street in the world. we first walked it (tiring) then debated whether the car would reach the top...its onlt a 1.3! we attempted...we CONQUERED! the view from the top was amasing and slightkly scary when driving back down...apparently its a 38 degree angle. we then headed to the oatgo peninsula saw some great wildife and drove an awesome road which hugged the coast all the way.
after the peninsula we made out way back to dunedin and headed to the supermarket to stock up on food for the next few weeks. was good to go somewhere slightly cheaper than queenstown. we then headed north making a diversion further north to the moeraki boulders. they were fairly spectacular but the tide was still fairly high so your couldnt see all of them.
the drive back to queenstown was very long, although spectacular. matilda wouldnt stop saying "oh wow" the whole way back. we watched the sunset as we drove and passed amasing mountain ranged and plateaus. we were both awe inspired. we drove through small towns/villages in the middle of nowhere...why anyone would live there i have no idea, theres not alot to do!
we arrived back into queenstown abnout 11.30, it was a welcome sight, and probably the busiest place weve seen since we left only 3days earlier. it was very welcoming. we took the car back to its home covered in dust from all the small roacds wed been driving along.
i was happy to go to bed after a very veey busy and jampacked few days. having to work the next morning at 6.30 was not good and my body told me that by noy waking up til 9am! work was surprisingly good about it. i think they could tell hopw guilty i felt. was not the way to make my entrance after 4days off!!
iwas good to be back at work again, see familiar faces and get some washing done!
think thats all for now
