The day care centre i have been volunteering at over the last few weeks is called Casa de Ninos and is 2 bus rides away from our house....Harry and i tend to take the taxi!It is SO cheap and it means we can wake up half an hour later! We get to the center at 9.00 every morning. For the first half an hour we play with the children in their classrooms, i am with the pre-kindergarten class and the children are aged between 4 and 6. They are so sweet...some of the are tiny! They call me muchachita which means sweet girl! during the week i have sung songs with them...with all my musical talent, coloured in lots of pictures, played duck duck goose and musical statues and chairs etc but the highlight came on my last day when i took complete control of the class...spoke a lot of Spanish and made hanging fish with them which i had prepared the day before, i even had a Blue Peter moment 'and here's one i made earlier!' I bought glue, creche paper, colourful paper which icut into hundreds of circles and i also draw out and cut out 13 double sided fish complete with juicy lips! How talented am i! The children loved it! They ran around jumping up and down and when it came to sticking the circles down they really got into it...the fish were almost 3D!!They hung them all up around the classroom after running up to me to take a photo of them! It was such a great feeling. I then handed out the gifts i had bought, play dough (which i had a taste of because it just reminds me so much of when i waws little), some jigsaws, crayons ad animal domino sets! They all ran up to me at once and hugged my legs and kissed me! SO SWEET!!!! The teacher was really sweet and thanked me a lot. Lunch break came during which we hand out the food and help the really titchy children eat their food...one more mouthful turns into about 10 but you have to get them to eat it somehow! They usually have rice and beans and either chicken or past! One little girl is so sweet and she eats so slowly but always finishes her food! After lunch the children have a siesta and all nap on mattresses in the classroom with music on! Before doing to they have to brush their teeth which takes about 10 minutes as they have to clean their tooth brushes as well! None of the can reall the sink so you have to lift them up at the same time as brushing their teeth! After the this you have to feed the little ones their bottle of milk and put your hands over their eyes to make them go to sleep! One of the boys insisted on me lying down and putting his hands over my eyes as well!
It was really sad saying goodbye to them all on the last day! I could have packed them all up in my suitcase and flown them back to England....i only managed to get 3 in though!!! x x x x
