Em Goes Exploring
And the adventure continues....
We came to Port Elizabeth to visit the Addo Elephant National Park and go on a township tour.
Our Addo tour guide, Vernon, was great - within 10 minutes of being in the park, we bumped into several large wild elephant families. We had very close views of the African elephants (their ears are actually shaped like Africa), including males, females and some baby elephants that were about 1 year old - just like dumbo. The elephants were just beautiful to see. Although, we had to move away from one of the dominant males before he charged at us!
Kudu, zebras, bushbuck, hartebeast and mongoose were all in our sites. Lions and lepeords also roame the park, but are shy so we did not get to seem them - perhaps we will on our Kruger safari!
Nelson took us on a tour of Port Elizabeth, which also included a trip into the various tonwships surrounding the city. He also provided us with a very detailed view on and off pre and post-apartheid. Depsite reservations that the tour may be intrusive, I am very glad I did it. It was very interesting to visit the shanty towns and be provided with an insight into the lives of the African people. We English (and white South Africans alike), can sometimes say we don''t even know our next door neighbour, but in the township, your neighbour is considered part of your family. The streets were busy with people having good chat (we shared a drink with some of local lads as we watched rugby highlights), and the children, so much fun....
At the moment, every day in South Africa has been amazing; the people of South Africa are so proud and just give by wanting to share their country. It is really special to be part of that.
Tonight will be our last night in PE and at the Wet Hippo hostel (which has a great pool), before we head to Coffee Bay. Coffee Bay, forms part of the 'real Africa' - to see the stunning coastline, I cannot wait!
Love Em x
p.s photos to come, when I remember to bring the cd with me to the internet cafe.
