Em Goes Exploring
The real Africa....
Coffee Bay is situated on the wild coast of Africa, stunning white beaches, high cliffs and constant surf - it is beautiful.
It is called the real Africa, because it is still inhabited by tribes (namely the Xhosa tribe) and cheifs, where there are no schools and the tribes live in round mud huts. The men usually head to town to work for the week, whilst the women stay behind work the land and look after the home.
We spent several nights at Coffee Shack (in our own round house). The hostel are highly supporting the locals, by educating the tourist on the local culture, helping to improve the schools and send children that want to go, to secondary school. A great place to meet locals and chat to them - we were entertained with African singing one night and African dancing another night - a real treat!
The beach was gorgeous and the weather delightful - I even managed to surf in my bikini!!! We took the opportunity to rest and sun bathe at Coffee Bay, took part in a sundowner (sitting on top of the cliffs and watching the sun set), and visiting the local shebeen. Sheebeens are illegal drinking houses that arose during apartheid. Beer is served in 750ml bottles and next door was an empty room for dancing, which we did with the locals - it was great fun. Not sure I would like to be in one late into the night though!
