Em Goes Exploring
Movin' On
We left Cape Town to spend a few days in Outdshoorn. Set back in the countryside, Oudtshoorn is surrounded by mountains and is very relaxed compared to Cape Town. We are staying in Backpackers Paradise, which is just like paradise. The smell of huge smokey log fires greats you (it is winter here), bif comfy sofas, rooms the size of mansion and an invitation to be cooked for - fantastic. I opted for the home-cooked Ostrich steak and sausage dinner, with salad, all for the eqivalent of 2 pounds!!
We stayed on Oudtshoorn to visit a widllife ranch, caves and an otsrich farm. The wildlife ranch is more of a sanctuary, raising big cats before releasing them to the wild.
One of the best experiences of the visit was to enter the Cheetah enclosure, sit next to and stroke the Cheetahs! It was amazing, they are beautiful to touch and surprisingly, Forest, Flectcher and Freddie were purring like mad!! As we left the enclosure, the cats were fed (very glad I did not know that before)!!
Before moving on to our next stop, we had a morning to visit the Cango caves and an Ostrich farm. The caves were fascinating, lots of stalagmites and stalagtites. Of course, we did not take the simple walking tour, but the ADVENTURE tour! This involved pot-holing up Devil's Chimney, through the Tunnel of Love and finally posting ourselves through the post box. It was great fun!
After we finished, we raced to the Ostrich farm to make sure we could catch the Baz Bus to our next stop. The experience which was just hilarious! Following the a nice introductory tour, we were asked if we would like to kiss an Ostrich; of course I obliged!!! It involved placing a pellet of food between your lips, and very unromatically, the Ostrich launched on you! Apparently Otrich like sparkly things, which was proved when Linda decided to consume Jess's nose piercing.
Ostrich riding followed - very surreal, holding onto the wings as the Ostrich raced around in the pen. Much more bumpy than riding a horse. The funniest thing is that South African's actually race Ostrich and the farm's jockeys demonstrated their skills - fantastic!
