Em Goes Exploring
What a start to the journey!
Arrived in Cape Town after a long, but generally good flight! Since arriving we have not stopped!
I have hiked to the top of Table Mountain, visted the city centre and the local markets, seen and enjoyed the seafood delights of the Victoria and Albert waterfront.
One of my favourite moments so far has to be..... shark diving! A magical day of wizzing over 10ft swell to be put into a cage and see up-close and personal views of wild Great White Sharks! I was amazed - they are elegant and powerful beasts, but so dosile at the same time. The sharks feed off the seal colony on the island, so we were able to view the lucky ones, basking on the sun and surfing the waves. Truly awsome!
We wouldn't be travellers without doing some tours, so we took a boat to Robben Island where Nelson Mandella was imprisoned. It was a real eye opener and truly humbling to be given a presentation by an ex-polictial prisoner - who has now made peace with the wardens, lives on the Island and is happy knowing that he helped to create a democratic South Africa.
June the 1st was spent doing a tour of the Cape Peninsula (as per the photo). You can see the sea is quite calm, no indication that two great oceans (the Indian and the Atlantic are meeting)... The warmer waters do bring lots of wildlife and I was lucky enough to make it to boulders beach to virtually touch wild South African penguins. They do bite, so I kept my distance. The cape is also home to baboons, boks and ostrich, all of which we were lucky enough to see in the wild. Baboons are hilarous!
The beaches are divine, white sand and beautiful turquoise seas. The sunset at Clifton Beach was fantastic too! I braved the waters for a quick dip, although the Atlantic waters were cold enough to take my breath away.
South Africa is fantastic! It is so rich in culture and scenery and there is always something to do.
Hope you are all well
Love Em xx
