Em Goes Exploring
Jeffery's Bay is a long stretch of white/golden sand with the breaking waves of the beautiful blue/green Indian Ocean.
We arrived at Island Vibe in J'Bay on the 5th after a very sociable trip on the Baz Bus from Wilderness. We ended up meeting Roise and an Australian couple we emt on out first trip from Cape Town to George/Oudtshoorn! On passing through Plattenburg Bay, we also saw Pete and Rudi who were staying with us at the Sunflower Stop in Cape Town - the travelling community in South Africa is very small (and all very friendly)!
After a rest in Oudsthoorn and Wilderness, we were ready to party, which was great as we were greeted by a short and shiny party - we knew we would like it here! There are several attractings in J'Bay, one of them being two rather large surf clothing outlets, so up nice and early, we hit the shops. Dad, you will be pleased to know I was very restrained and just purchased myself a pretty scarf to keep me warm at night!
The second main attraction of J'Bay, is the sun. It is sunny and hot here! Two days in, and the sun is still shining. So, like true brits, we shared our shining beakon bodies to the world and sunbathed as soon as we had finished shopping!
I suppose I should mention the third main attraction, surfing! 2km up the coast are the 'supertubes'. With a constant swell, the supertubes are nearly always rolling in. As a result, we have met some great people, here to just chill and surf. Stefan, I have met a local South African who lived in St Agnes for 2 years and said that English surfers are much more friendly that the local Africans!
Being in such a beautiful spot, it would have been rude to go back to bed and ignore the stunning sunrise here at J'Bay. So, from 6.30am to 8.00am, perched on the wooden veranda and with the company of the dog and some friendly surfers, I watched the sun rise over the mountains and eventually the bay, revealing a spectular orange light. To top things off, dolphins played in the bay. It was magic!
On Wednesday morning, I ran along the virtually deserted beach (with exception to local people collecting shells), to see early morning surfers ride 'supertubes'. Surfing fraternity, I would highly recommend this spot!
We spent our last day in Jeffery's Bay riding horses, about 10km away from J'Bay. We rode in the dunes and along the beach. The views were just stunning, over the huge white sand dunes you could see the beautiful blue Indian Ocean and the waves peeling along the bay. It was a magical experience I will never forget.
We leave J'Bay, the relaxed daytimes and the party nightimes (before we seriously do ourselves liver damage!), to head north-east to Port Elizabeth.
Love Em x
