This morning Emily and i went and jumped on Sophie because its her birthday! This afternoon we will take her to a spa and treat her to massages and other luxurious things before we go out to dinner to celebrate!
Today I am working in the hemo dialysis ward. Here I see patients who have chronic kidney failure. They come here 2-3 times a week, each time for 4 hours and their blood is filtered using a machine as their kidneys can no longer. They have 2 tubes, one to take blood out and one to return it. (Simultaneously) The blood is taken out of the body the arterial pressure is monitored before going through the blood pump, it is the injected with heparin to prevent it from clotting, after this it goes through a filter which extracts waste products and adds certain nutrients. The blood pressure is monitored before it is returned to the patient. It costs 1,800B (about $60) for each cycle and the patient has to have 2-3 cycles a week for the rest of their lives. The government and financial aid pays for most of it but some patients are paying out of pocket and as you could imagine it adds up!
So I have seen tubes being put in and taken out, I have been told how it all works. But seeing as there's nothing hands on that I can do I've spent most of my day reading textbooks about it.
