Today as we arrived at the hospital our doctor that we were shadowing throughout the day rushed us over to the Labour Ward as there was a mother who was 9cm and was keen to have her baby. However when we arrived at the Labour Ward we were told that it could be another 30 minutes until we were allowed in as the mother was quite distressed. When we were eventually allowed into the room we found not one woman, but two labouring. It was one womans firsth child and the other womans fourth child, both hoped to have natural births. After another 30 minutes and a great big push a little baby appeared. It was then checked and it's lungs cleared before having a cuddle with it's mumma before going into the baby ward. The other woman's baby was too big, she was fully dialated, however the baby wasn't going to fit through the mothers small pelvic bone structure so she had to have a cesarean. We followed her into the OT, and after 7 minutes the 9 pound baby girl was born. She was shown to her mother who was overjoyed before being wheeled into the baby ward and the mother stitched up. The whole cesarean from cut to stitch was 15 minutes. It was a slightly different procedure to the last cesarean that i saw. After the baby and the afterbirth were born the placenta was take outside of the body and massaged and stitched back up before being placed back inside of the womans body and then her outer layers were stitched back together.
It was then lunchtime and we hung about the hospital for a while before the doctor came and found us again and took us to the outpatient ward where they do pap smears and small procedures under local anethetic. One woman had an abnormal pap smear result so they had to cut out a section of her cervix to get rid of the abnormal cells that could evolve into cervical cancer. If this was unsuccessful then the woman would have a hysterectomy to remove the vervix and uterus to stop the spreading of this virus.
At the end of the day we made it back to the Gap Medics house and Sophie and I walked to the Wifi cafe up the road so we could begin to book our travels. We're getting there slowly, we have a plan and have started booking, but researching places to stay that are reasonably priced is taking a bit of time. At 8pm we all loaded into red taxis/buses (not sure how to spell the actual name) and headed into the centre of Chiang Mai to the nightmarket and the ladyboy show -which i found rather...umm..interesting and a bit confusing and a bit entertaining and shocked when one sat on my knee! We then wandered through the market and back to bed!
