Again this morning, i was up about 6am and sorted the car out quickly and quietly before going off to check the surf 30 seconds down the road.
I found the surf again looked similar to a 2/3ft cross shore day at Porthcawl, but there was a surfable peak so I went out for about 2 hours. It was marginally better than it looked, and I had a half productive surf, so was pretty pleased when I got out.
I then went off and spent half an hour doing food shopping, a favourite pass time obviously (although picking though the bargains is strangely satisfying).
I then went across the road to the surf shop, and purchased my Birthday/Christmas present from Mum and Dad...a longboard! Having seen people cruising down the cycle paths and pavements it looked like such good fun I wanted in, plus I have been thinking about one ever since the road trip began. I went for a 'cheap' one in the end, for $120, and I'm barely going to notice the difference, and if I can't fit it in my luggage, I am going to have to give it to Diggor before Bali anyway.
I then spent about an hour cruising around the town, and considering I have never owned a skateboard, would go as far as to say I picked up the gist pretty quickly. However I did realise, buying your 1st one at nearly 20 years old makes you pretty slow on the uptake, plus makes you look a bit like an uncoordinated 5 year old to start with.
When I got back I had some lunch and decided to go off for the walk around Evans Head. However I found that the Cigarette Lighter in the car had stopped working. After freaking out for a fair while, I found the solder connection had come apart...no one it didn't work. Then I also found some of the display had disappeared, e.g. The lights symbols and the clock. I assume that the fuse has gone or something with the circuit breaking at the fag lighter. Whatever the reason I'm really pissed off, as I now can't A) use the SatNav (as the battery is already flat) and B) Cant charge my phones. As I can do is find out where a Hyundai garage is, and when I'm next near on get them to sort it. I really can't afford it, and I'm going I be without any sort of phone soon too..
In my raging/freaking out state of mind I sacked off the walk, and decided I would go to the next spot south, as who knew how long it would take to get there.
An hour later, and miraculously without getting lost, I was at Angourie, a tiny place 5 minutes south of Yamba. Here there were 2 freshwater lagoons called 'The Blue Holes' which were mentioned in the surf book, so I went to check it out.
They were a really cool little spot, and it turned out loads of people were there 'tombstoning'. I got talking to a family there with a picnic, and the son took me off and showed me all the jump spots. At the 1st pool it was just a 10/15ft easy rock ledge jump into the deep pool...easy. The 2nd pool was a different story; you had to swim across to the otherside, and rock climb up a cliff face to the 2 different spots. The 1st was about 20/25ft, and easy as the water was directly bellow. The 2nd jump was the sketchiest one I have ever done; it was probably as high or maybe higher than the one at the Blue Lagoon in Pembrokeshire, plus you had to jump out and 6/7ft to clear the rock ledge slightly bellow. Having done that one just the once I thought enough was enough, and went back to the car.
From there I went 15 minutes back to the northern end of Yamba main beach to check the surf, which was pumping! It was a clean and solid 5/6ft and occasionally barrelling onto a shallow bottom. I surfed for as long as I could, but an hour and a half later I was just knakered after the morning surf. I did however get the best waves I have had in months, which gave me some confidence back. I also copped the worst beating of my life so far, getting caught just the wrong side of a 6/7ft set wave. I got slammed into the sand so hard I will be finding particles for days, and how my board didn't break in 2 I will never know.
Later I had some dinner, found somewhere to pack up for the night and went to sleep. My body is pretty achy now from running the last 2 days, using muscles I didnt know I had skating and getting aquatinted with the ocean floor this arvo.
My phone will probably die between now and tomorrow evening when I would have written my next blog..so I don't know what's going to happen.
