Daegu is famous for Mt Palgong on its northern border with the temples of Gatbawi, Donghwasa, Pagyesa, and others, and Mt Apsen on its south. But the cities central core is also home to a traditional herbal street which has played a role in traditional life for generations. There is a herbal festival held annually along the famous herbal street in the downtown core. This year as we happened to be downtown for schools club day we spent some time at the herbal festival before lunch. A mock gate was setup at the eastern end of the herbal street, which runs westerly as it curves slightly northward. Like most festivals there were lines of festival tents setup. As this is a smaller venue then most other festivals in some ways its was somewhat of a sidewalk sale. The vendors who line the street had table in front of their stores displaying some of their herbal goods. Some of them are quite aromatic and it would be interesting to know what the uses of these are. In one case they were frying ginseng roots in tempura. A student also showed me a deer horn and said that it is eaten but not sure how or for what purpose. One of the tents allowed people to dress up in traditional costumes to have your photo taken. I suggested to our students we take a group pic but they all refused. Two of them however were happy to volunteer along with a teacher. The festival seemed to be more interesting and lively then when I had come last year. This was during the day on a friday afternoon and I had expected it to be somewhat dead. After lunch we headed back to Gyeongsang Gamyeong Park to meet up for the afternoons activities. I had decided to reward the two students that dressed up in costumes for the photos with a candy bag each. I had hoped they would share them with their friends as I was using them to set an example to the other students who all kept refusing to have their pictures taken throughout the day. Instead the two girls said thankyou, put the candy bags in their bags, and went and sat by themselves here are pictures from last years event http://blog.travelpod.com/travel-blog-e ntries/londone7/1/1304505586/tpod.html
