Europe in a Backpack
Get me out of Italy, I have moved further north to the cooler climate of Interlaken, Switzerland. Interlaken means between lakes and it actually is a little town in the middle of two lakes with the Alps surrounding it. I am so comfortable here because it looks like home. Yesterday I settled into my room at a nice little place called balmer's herberge and went for a hike to the top of a small mountain nearby. I got some great pictures but still can't upload to any computers yet. When I came back to the hostel I actually met up with a kid from Greece and Rome that Chris and I traveled with. We chilled and played chess on a lifesize chessboard. It was a very slow game but people actually started gathering to watch. We joked as we moved the pieces that came up to our waists. This morning I had to wake up at 8 am to catch the canyoning tour. And that is not as easy as it sounds considering I don't have an alarm clock or watch. But I made it and I am so glad I did. It took about an hour to drive to the canyon and about 20 minutes to hike into it for our group of 12. We were fitted with wetsuits, helmets, lifevests, and harnesses. It didn't really hit me about what I was doing until I put the harness on. When I say canyoning, most people think of just a bunch of people hiking through a canyon taking pictures. No No. Canyoning is cliff jumps into pools of water, followed by slides down sheer rock cliffs, followed by repelling down waterfalls. Our trip started with the largest jump of the day to get the ball rolling. A nice 45 foot cliff jump into a large pool of cold water fresh off the alps. Then we moved on to some slides. The slides were just long shoots of polished canyon almost vertical with a little water going through it. This one slide was pretty crazy because we actually had to jump over a gap and land on our backs to slide 25 feet into the water. It was pretty intimidating. Next we did some more jumps and some more shoots before we hooked in to do the repell. 60 feet of open waterfall as I slowly descended. It was great. We continued on to some more shoots and jumps before coming to the grand finale. First, we had to do a long fast shoot and I must have gone about 20 feet under water because it took forever to come up. The guy asked me where I went when I finally surfaced. I replied with choking on water. Then we had to walk along a skinny ledge to be lowered down by a guy and dropped into a pool about twenty feet down before finally jumping on the last shoot where we had to hold our left arm straight out to keep from turning over into the rocks. It was the best day ever. 7 hours of jumping repelling and slides. I think I perfected my front flip also. Tomorrow we are having a 4th of july bbq party in our backyard and a couple of us are gonna try to find some fireworks in town. We'll see. One more day in Interlaken and then on to Barcelona and then Pamplona. Bonjour.
