Europe in a Backpack
Sorry about the late update. It is hard to get to computers in Greece. So we hopped on the early train from Sorrento to Bari in order to catch our Ferry to Greece. The trains ended up taking all day and we got into to port with only about 30 minutes to spare before the ferry departed. When I say ferry, I mean cruise ship and with our eurail passes we only have to pay 6 euro to get a spot on the deck for an enjoyable night of sleep. Not really. However, that 6 euro turns in 31 with the port taxes and fuel surcharges. The extra travel expenses are really hurting our budget. When we boarded the ferry, we sat down at the all night bar and met some nice Danish girls that wanted us to go back to denmark with them. I am not sure of the customs there, but one of them stared at me all night and it was a little awkward. Felt like a high school dance or something. Anyways, me and chris finished our beers and found some uncomfortable couches under a loud tv and very bright lights to pass out under. We didnt get any sleep. We arrived in Greece very tired and hungry to rush and catch another ferry to the island we are staying on. Arrived at our hostel called the Pink Palace and were welcomed with a shot of ouzo at 6 in the morning. So we were tired, hungry, and choking down the ouzo when we finally got to our room and passed out for 5 hours. The pink palace is like a resort for backpackers. It is very cheap and we get our own room with A/C and a balcony over the ocean. Not to mention free dinner and breakfast. Yesterday, Chris and I enjoyed the local booze cruise that they offer. A tiny ship packed with Americans, Canadiens, and australians dancing to loud music and having a couple beers. Great time. We started out cliff diving, and then moved on to a private beach, next to some caves that we could swim to, and on to a monastery at the end. 7 hours total and very very fun. After that we grabbed some dinner and joined the ouzo circle. The ouzo circle is a circle of guests with traditional greek dancing in the middle. Next they bring out 10 stacks of ceramic plates (not the thin ones either) and proceed to give every one a shot and immediately break a plate over their heads. Kinda hurts a little but everyone is having a great time it doesn't matter. Today we tried to save some money and just laid at the beach all day. Swimming in these waters is so amazing and warm. It is pure paradise. Oh yeah, me and chris were offered jobs as bouncers for 3 weeks at this place so you might need to redirect our personal belongings from Sorrento to Corfu. We are not gonna take the positions however as we still need to make our way for the running of the bulls. We are still safe and everything is fine. I even offended some Australian girls last night when I asked them if every Australian wrestles crocodiles. Talk to you soon, Cole and Chris
