Europe in a Backpack
Ok, so we left Greece. Corfu was amazing and I miss the air conditioned room. Chris and I hopped on the night ferry from Greece to Italy when he became horribly sick with a bug that was going around the pink palace. He was throwing up from both ends and quite the horrible night. But the next morning he was feeling better and we borded the first train of three to get to rome. Not bad, not good. We left that train and boarded the second train to napoli. Horrible. 4 hours on the a train with no air conditioning and no windows that opened in 100 degree weather with 98% humidity. Chris really thought I was gonna pass out in the train car. I thought I was too. We eventually made it to Roma around six and dropped our bags off to go explore. We didn't know where we were going but we figured the coloseum wasn't too hard to find. We lost our way a couple times and then found it and then lost it again. Next thing we know, we were staring the Coloseum in the face. Giant and quite amazing. Next we decided to find our way to the Trevi fountain since the Vatican was closed at this point. We got lost again and finally found a group of people with maps so we followed them. Everything we see is so much more amazing and mind blowing in person. We must have stared at the fountain for a good 30 minutes. Then we decided to check out the spanish steps since it was so close. The spanish steps are what the picture is of. However, the night we were there it was full of people drinking wine and sitting on the steps. So we joined them just to rest our tired feet and people watch. Next thing we know a band is setting up on the steps next to us. I guess the spanish steps are the best place to go at night and hang out. It was great. The band played only american songs that they didn't even know what the songs meant. Mostly beatles but very good nonetheless. I finished a beer on the steps and we called it a night. The next morning I had to see the Vatican. So I tried to convince Chris to go but he didn't have the money. So I paid the 4 euro for the Metro all day and hopped on. From what I hear the Vatican is too crowded early in the morning so I decided to go to the Coloseum again and actually go inside. I got in line and said this is ridiculous. So I got out of line, walked right to the front and snuck in to buy a ticket. Usually it should take an hour and a half waiting in line, but only a minute and a half for me. After touring the Coloseum, I jumped on the next metro to the vatican just before noon. Supposedly it clears up at lunch time. Not in my case. I walked into St. Peter's Square only to find thousands upon thousands of people staring at the sky. What is going on? I overhear a priest say only one more minute. Then, he appears. The Pope himself. He stood at the window and said a prayer in 6 different languages. Each nationality cheered when he said their country. That was pretty cool. What wasn't cool was the enormous crowd shuffling to the basilica to get in. I pulled my Coloseum job and finally snuck my way up to the front. The sun was beating down and it must have been a 110 degrees out. After an hour sitting in the sweltering heat drenched in sweat, they finally let us in. I couldn't take enough pictures of the Vatican I used up an entire 512mb card before I had to switch. It was so beautiful and unbelieveable that someone built that. I tried to make my way to the Sistine Chapel only to find out it is closed on this one day a month the Pope speaks. Maybe tomorrow. Chris is leaving to go back home tonight and I start my journey alone from here on out. Wish me luck and I will update you soon.
