I woke up about 10 am on the train, a decent 12 hour sleep! I bought a subway sandwich the previous night to have for breakfast. I know you may be thinking that is weird, but the Chinese have noodles for every meal, and that's even more weird! Imagine waking up and preparing noodles and celery and beef for breakfast. It is so turnful! It is definitely a very different culture over here. My sub was delicious however! I started reading shantaram on the train. It's a book about an Australian man who escapes a high security prison and hides in Bombay. It's fascinating so far and I think it will be a book Id recommend to dad. Half one came and the train stopped at shanghai! I have not one complaint about this train ride. Compared to last time it was a breeze . We got the subway and exited at nanjing road west and it was only a five minute walk to 'etour youth hostel'. We got out keys and were handed bed sheets. This is a first! This hostel made us remove the previous travellers dirty sheets! Rank! However the place is fine.
After getting showered I bagged everything up for washing as I haven't washed one thing since being away. This hostel is pretty decent in that it has washing and drying facilities and a place where you can hang them over night. Washing sorted and it was time to check out shanghai! I absolutely loved it! It is like massive city with big shops and flashy lights, yet still has nice architecture and places to sit and relax. It also reminds me of New York which I am slowly beginning to realise is on of my favourite places ever! We sat down and had a cold glass of orange and took some photos with a nice background. We then went to got some food in a side street near our hostel. When we entered we were ignored by everyone, so we just took it upon ourselves to sit down and grab a menu. We picked random things off the menu and had no clue what we were getting, but it was my favourite thing I have eaten since I have left! Delicious! One bowl was grilled veg in a blackbean sauce, and the other was diced potatoes and some type of green veg, with fried rice on the side. The entire thing was demolished and I was well happy with my dinner!
We retired back to the hostel and informed our families that we are safe and alive and started googling things to do in shanghai. Shanghai is different compared to previous places. You do less day excursions and it's more about the nightlife and all the lovely lights and skylines. As it was Saturday night we stuck on our one decent(ish) dress and got the tube to a popular local area. We chilled and had some good food and went to a place with some music. Hearing one direction being played in a shanghai bar is truly an experience. We also bumped into the two tallest German basketball players I have ever seen. They were about 6ft8 I think. Insane! All the little Chinese people were just in awe!
On our way home we got chatting to mersaille and ceaser (salad). They were funny guys and had guestlist for the 'biggest club in shanghai' . Haha. We went along anyway and it was your standard nightclub bulls*** at the start. Being held back in a queue because its 'too full' at the minute while they let other members prance on it. I was rolling my eyes from the offset as back home I don't even like clubs. My friends and I are more bar people with the occasional club on birthdays Etc. just as I was about to say I was heading back to the hostel the bouncer 'arrow' let us in. The whole thing really does sound like a farce. However when I got inside it was amazing. The club was in a building which had the most incredible view of shanghai, but obviously to be close to the widow to get a decent picture you have to be 'VIP' lol. We danced and had a good night then decided it was home time. Mel got some more rank street food while I hailed a cab. Bedtime!
