Deborahs journey
I have been in Rotorua the past week. It is an old spa town situated in a volcainic area. This has lead to geothermal areas all around Rotorua. You can walk very far around the city before you see steam coming out the soil. One area in particalur around the sulpahr bay part of Lake Rotorua has lots of theraml action. The photo above is from Waiotapu thermal wondeland where in went to yesturday. It is the champagne pool where there are loads of different minerals in the water and mixed with the sulpah has leasd to all the colours on the edge of the water. The whole area has numerous mud pools, craters and thermal pools and geyers. The whole areas is amazing seeing all this steam coming fromt he ground and mud bubbling away. Lady Knox Geysers is not far from this site and is set of at 10.15 everyday.
In the city the Polynesian spa uses the thermal water in seferal thermal pools. They range from38 to 45 degrees and can get too hot after a while.
On Tuesday evening i went to a maori hangi. here u get taken to a maori village, see a traditional welcome take place and are then able to walk through the village. We are then directed into a room where we are entertained with maori song, dance and the haka. NExt we are taken into the dining hall and a traditional maori buffet is laid out all cooked via fires. It was really good to see the tradiotnal maori dances, dress etc.
Before i got to Rotorua is was in Whitianga. Near to here is hot water beach. U dig a hole in the sand at low tide and hit hot springs. u do have to be careful as the water can reach boiling. This whole area is in the coromadel mountians and Whitianga has great walks along the cliff to some fantastic beachs which were really quiet as the summer season is now over.
NExt stop Waitomo.
