Monday morning we gathered the troops. There are 16 of us now. Our plan was to go to The Domino Club, drink mamawanas and see the pigs. We drove through the jungle with only one wrong turn but quickly got back on track. It's interesting to drive here because we used to live here 11 years ago, so everything is familiar but hazy. We made it out to one of our favorite places on the island to find that they are closed on Monday. We were mildly disappointed but decided we would return on Tuesday.
We continued down the jungle road to head to Rainbow Beach. Calling it a road is generous. It is more like a never ending path of pothole after pothole, so it was a slow trek. We made it the West end and found a nice spot under a beautiful shade tree. The beaches in St Croix are awesome because they all have really great restaurant/bars on them. We always pack a cooler full of food and beer. Everyone can choose to make a sandwich or eat at the bar. You can have a beer or a fancy blender drink. It's fun and easy.
We enjoyed our day at the beach mostly hanging out in the ocean which is a beautiful 87 degrees. We packed up around 4pm and decided to head back via a different route. Eric thought there might be a farmers market on this new road. It was a bit of an adventure. We did not find a farmers market but we did find a spot with several mango trees full of ripe fruit. We stopped the car and Eric and I jumped out of our car and Scott and Keith jumped out of the car that was following us. We all ran around gathering mangos. We now call that road Mango Road.
We made our way back to the house for a beautiful dinner grilled up by myself and Ray. Eric's sister Amanda arrived around 5pm today so now we are 17.
Tuesday morning Lesley, Ray, Eric and I were invited to Cane Bay Dreams for brunch and rehearsal. Keith and Ed made an amazing crepe breakfast for us that included both sweet and savory. Scott and Missy got up early and returned to Mango Road for a gathering of fruit. Scott made us the best Mango smoothies ever. We will call them smoothies because it was breakfast but they were actually mango margaritas.
We finally made it to see the pigs. Norma, the owner of the Domino Club has been raising pigs her entire life. They are her babies. She brings a few up to pens by the bar everyday to enjoy a few non-alcolic beers. As keith says, "It is the most fun, rednecky thing you will ever do." We had mamawanas, which is a blend of honey, rum, fermented wine and herbs. They are delicious. And.....we finally got to see the pigs.
Some went to the beach afterwards. Eric and I had to make a replenishment grocery store run. Amanda took a couple of dives off the famous St. Croix wall. At the end of the day we all met up at Rowdy Joes for dinner. We were Rowdy with our large group. The food was great and their specialty lemon, ginger cocktail was awesome.
Tomorrow is our big day. Eric and I are celbrating 20 years of marriage with a vow renewal ceremony on our favorite beach.
