Today we had intended to go to "Old Faithful", the famous geyser in the Park. It should have taken us an hour or so to reach this from our hotel. Instead, it took us all morning. this was because we ran into "Bison jam", where all traffic was stopped because the bison were all over the road. We did eventually arrive & saw the geyser spurt, at almost the exact time predicted. We then drove around one of the Park roads & saw a lot of cars stopped. We thought, bison again, but in fact it was a black bear. Very pleasing, especially as we were on our way to our exit at the time. The circular route we took around the Park is 96 miles, plus 14 miles each way from our entrance to join the circular makes 124 miles in total in the park today. This by no means encompasses all of the Park, in fact it only covers a small portion of it. Two of the passes are still closed due to snow. Another is open only at night due to the danger of avalanches.
We had a much colder day today with snow at times. We borrowed a wheelchair so that I could take Doreen to see the geyser erupt & managed to get a good spot to watch, but it was cold. There are many more geysers around the Park & also other strange sights like mudpots, steam vents & a sulphur cauldron. The whole area is a hotbed of volcanic & hydrothermal activity.
Tomorow we start on our trek across the States towards New York. I had intended to take a high pass out of the Park but it is still closed. We shall have to take an alternative, which we have already traversed three times. Never mind, might see another bear.
Mileage today 126. Total (this car) 2072. Total 2603.
