Another day, another State. This time it's North Dakota. A long day's travelling, not helped by moving to another time zone. Some more fantastic scenery, you can appreciate why they call Montana the "Big Sky" state. It is difficult to describe but the landscape is rather flat in parts & the horizon seems so far away. This combined with the very clear atmosphere give this impression of the sky being bigger than normal, more stretched out as it were. Anyway, we've seen it for ourselves now so we do appreciate it. Some of the fields alongside the Highway, particularly in North Dakota, are absolutely huge, stretching as far as the eye can see & probably a lot further. The farm machinery is super-sized to suit, American style of course.
Whilst travelling we stopped off at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in the Dakota Badlands. Really weird landscape here, odd shaped rocks & hills scattered about at random. Doreen says it reminds her of the old Western movies. A local offered to take our photo together without us asking, they really are very friendly & extremely polite, not as they are often portrayed.
Tomorrow we move on to another state, Minnesota. There is trouble all around with floods caused by exceptional rainfall coupled with late snow melt, they were appealing on the radio for volunteers to help fill sandbags to re-inforce the levees protecting Bismarck. We were able to cross the Missouri river at Bismarck without any problems, but some bridges are closed & we saw a lot of standing water in fields. We shall be close to the Mississippi river tomorrow so we shall see what that is like. We have been very lucky with the weather so far, we seem to have missed most of the bad weather, so let's hope our luck holds out.
Mileage today 406. Total (this car) 2,843. Total 3,374.
