The picture shows our car for the trip, a Chevrolet Aveo, actually built by Daewoo in Korea. After I collected it I noticed an unusual symbol on the dash. Not enough time to take it back yesterday & I was not able to check it out until today, (Hertz office closed) when I found it meant low pressure in one or more tyres. Black mark to Hertz! This cost us about an hour's delay this morning, coming off the Highway, checking tyres, finding gas station, buying gas, (to get the compressor turned on), pumping tyres, etc. Anyway the car seems fine, plenty of room & easily able to keep up with the highway traffic. Only omission I would have liked is cruise control but I guess I can live without it for the next 4,000 miles or so.
We travelled up from Pasadena today, partly close to the Pacific Ocean & partly through the mountains with some spectacular views. Early on the journey was not very nice on multi-lane freeways with lots of traffic, even on a Sunday. Later on it was much more pleasant but still quite high speed dual carriageways. Most traffic is moving at about 75 - 80 mph, similar to the UK & much faster than when I lived in the USA, with strictly enforced 55mph limits back then.
We are now at Morro Bay, about half way between Los Angeles & San Fransisco & will move on to SF tomorrow.
Yesterday was a beautiful day. We started off by collecting the car & then parking it up whilst we went to watch a soapbox derby in downtown LA. We went in the minivan as it had more space for 5 of us. Doreen & I watched on a large screen TV whilst Dave, Lesley & Andrew went to the trackside. We probably had a better view as the crowds were about 15 deep. We found a cafe in the LA jewellery quarter & waited for LA "slow food". It was good when it eventually arrived though how preparing sandwiches & salads can take so long is baffling.
We then moved on to a model train shop looking for bits for Chris. Prices were, to us, very epensive & nothing was bought. Next we moved on to Manhattan Beach & walked down the pier whilst Doreen sat in the van. We moved on south through Hermosa Beach to Redondo Beach. A glorious area altogether with some beautiful properties. We ate fish & chips in a seafood restaurant to finish off a wonderful day.
David, Lesley & Andrew flew back to New York early this morning (Kim had already left to work on an Indian reservation for a short time) so we are now on our own.
