Today we had planned to take the Pacific Coast Highway (US Route 1) all the way past Big Sur to San Francisco, but unfortunately it was blocked, probably by a rockslide. So we had to backtrack & use US 101 further inland, through farmland. This was a real disappointment as the route along the Pacific is I am told, quite spectacular, cut into the cliffs above the ocean. Never mind, have to do it next time. We did just over 300 miles today & arrived in SF later than expected due to the detour. One thing we did get to see before we had to turn back was the Elephant Seals basking in the sun. There were hundreds of them, some of which you can see in the photo. They come ashore at this time of year to moult.
Tomorrow we plan to explore SF & move on to Yosemite the next day.
