Today Neil, Sharon, Melanie, Joanna and Ann did a cultural tour whilst Tanya and Terry tried their luck at fishing again. The Davey clan had to head down to the local Aboriginal community, Djaridjin, for this tour. Terry and Tanya were going to give fishing a bit more of a go. The tour leader Bundy (an aboriginal elder of this community and the owner of this business) was conducting the tour along with his 3 children. We were shown how to make a spear from willow trees and how to straighten them with heat from the fire and pressure from placing it in a tree fork and bending it a certain way. We then went to head off but Bundy explained that his car was not working. Bundy and his 2 kids piled into one of the other cars and Neil put Bundy's spears on the front of our car in the fishing rod holder. We then headed off through the community and came to a stop because there was a 4 metre python across the track. His son Derek just walked up, grabbed it by the tail and flung it into the front yard of the nearest house.
We then did some 4 wheel driving along the beach to a magnificent inlet; a snorkelers paradise. It was beautiful. Whilst we were learning some of the aboriginal culture from Bundy, his children were in this beautiful inlet catching us a bite to eat; that’s right spearing fish for us to throw straight on the fire. They caught two fish with on being a a spotted trevally and the other a type of cod which were both put straight on the fire. We all stood around and ate the fish directly from the coals. Fantastic. His daughter Sheliah (16yrs) had also cut out the gizzards from one of the fish which she put on the fire as well. When it was cooked she washed it in the salt water and then cut it into small pieces. It was like eating abalone. Bundy also told Neil that when he went mud crabbing with Vincent, to tell Vincent "That fella from Djaridjin said to get me some oysters". No need to mention Bundys name, as he would know who it came from.
When it was time to head off (3 vehicles in total) one couple got bogged in the sand. Neil set out to help them and then the unthinkable happened. Obviously the other driver not being an experienced 4 wheel driver; even after clear instructions from Neil what to do, he put his foot on the accelerator and reversed straight into us at about 40kmh. It was horrible, Joanna was crying and Ann and Sharon had never heard Melanie swear like that before. Lucky for the Davey clan the Nissan is a tough cookie and only had damage of smashed driving lights, bent bull bar, aerial and another few minor things. Neil couldn’t open the bonnet to see if there was any serious damage, but the bulbar took the brunt of it with some minor panel damage. The Toyota definitely came off 2nd best, shattered rear windscreen, concaved back panels etc etc. Another victory for Nissan. Upon returning to camp Tanya and Terry noticed straight away and were eager to find out the story.
After settling down from our adventure we had nibbles and drinks then steak for dinner. Neil and Melanie had been invited to go night fishing with Bundy at 6.30 that night so headed back to the aboriginal community. They sat there from 5.30 to 7.30 before asking someone for directions to Bundy’s house and finding that he was not home. Unfortunately during this time Terry took a turn for the worse and ended up with the bug that had hit Melanie.
