Australia
Hello! Wow- so much stuff to catch up on. As you'll notice I have posted a couple new photo albums (3). Luckily a picture says a thousand words or else I could spend forever writing about my time here. So here is the quick update. First check out the photos from the zoo and rugby. On Wed. the 15th we went to the Melbourne Zoo for my Wildlife Biolgoy class. It was really neat- we sketched fur seals, reptiles, and birds while learning facts about them and their behaviours. On Thurs. I went to the Rugby 7's for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth games. The Commonwealth Games are like the Olympics for all the countries in the commonwealth of Britain (71). It is quite a big deal here and there were festivals and events going on all during the games. Rugby 7's was awesome. I cheered for Australia of course as well as Canada and small countries like Uganda which even though they weren't as big and skilled as some of the other countries still put in a spectacular effort- Uganda ended up winning their second game and the crowd went wild. On Saturday I went to Airey's Inlet with my Education in Natural Landscapes class. We found some interesting sea critters as we learned what life was like for a marine ecologist. Then we climbed the lighthouse for a great view. In the afternoon we did a bushwalk and saw some pretty interesting trees. Our guide told us a whole bunch of interesting facts- I even got to eat seaweed. Sunday morning we watched the men's and women's marathon as it passed the university twice. The runners were intense. I watched the finish on TV and the Australian lady who won crossed the finish line just 2 seconds before the silver medalist from Kenya. It was quite close. That night I wandered down to the Yara river to see some of the festivities. There were lots of people to see the various bands and acts. I saw a lady using 40 hoola hoops at once- quite skilled. You will also see pictures of the lovely specimens that my group is researching for my Experiental Animal Behaviour class- possums! They are so cute. We have to lure them down to feeders and see their reaction to a dog barking. Some of them are quite brave as last night one came right up to us looking for food. I think it was the same one that we saw fall into the trash can while scavaging for scraps earlier in the evening- quite funny. This past weekend I went to a camp with a church that I have been attending. It was quite fun as camp always is. : )
