We realised we were travelling a few days ahead of our itinerary so we decided to see some more of Uttar Pradesh (the Indian state where Agra is located).
Allahabad is at the point where Indias most holy rivers meet, the shallow and muddy Ganges and the deeeper, greener Yamuna. At certain occasions you can see the two waters clearly mixing, with a stark contrast in colours either side of a dividing line.
Hindu pilgrims flock here year round to bathe in the waters. We thought it was busy when we were there with hundreds of tents covering the river banks, giving it a festival atmosphere. However numbers reach epic proportions during Magh Mela and most noteably Kumbh Mela, every 12 years, which is said to be the largest religious gathering in the world.
We took a walking tour around the rest of the town, seeing an old gothic cathedral and meeting the local people who seemed all too happy to stop for a chat.
We are off to Kushinagar to Buddha's final resting place and hopefully to stay with some monks! xxx
