Hello again!
We are wrapping up our stay in Hong Kong so we thought it would be a good time to fill you in on what we've been upto.
Over the last five days we have explored Hong Kong's three main regions; Lantau, Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. We were kindly offered a place to stay with a family friend (thank you so much Sandra!) on Lantau island, so thats where we started. We visited the giant buddha in Ngong Ping, the buddha was very impressive but the village has been created as an attraction with little else to offer than gift shops and starbucks. We took a long walk through the surrounding hills then a cable car ride which had some spectacular views. We ended the day in Tai o, a traditional fishing village on stilts, where we fell in love with its rustic charms and relaxed pace of life.
The next day we got a ferry to Hong Kong island and followed a self guided tour around the central and western districts. We strolled through the old market streets selling herbal remedies and antiques as well as the modern high rise financial centres. We had a rest in Hong Kong park before taking a tram to the top of Victoria Peak for panoramic views of the city at dusk. We spent the evening dining and drinking locally with our wonderful local guide Sammie (a friend from home).
The last region to see was Kowloon, this area offers bustling markets and street food on every corner. On Sammie's recommendation we started with the goldfish market in Mong Kok and wandered upto the adjacent flower market and bird's nest garden. The markets all had their own unique charm although Liz was a little upset seeing the quantity of animals in confined cages. At 8pm we went to the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront to see the 'Symphony of Lights'. Dinner left Dale under local anaesthetic the next day after he lost most of his tooth to some chutneyed pork!!
Before leaving we took advantage of the good weather and scenic local beach and spent the day sunning and swimming. We are packing our bags yet again and heading to Shangshou in mainland China tomorrow.
We would like to say thank you so much to Sandra for her hospitality this past week, and to Sammie for giving us a real local experience of Hong Kong
Dale and Liz xx
