Liz and Dale's Travel Diary
Greetings from Tokyo!!
After a long flight and a mild case of jet lag we were greeted by an unexpected festival celebrating the arrival of winter. The Torinoichi festival brings a large gathering of people, it is celebrated with Kazari Kumade; ornamental rakes that are believed to rake in wealth, fortune and success. There was a joyous atmosphere which we couldn't help be absorbed by even though we were rather tired!!On our first full we took in the sights of Tokyo starting with an early morning visit to the Tsukiji fish market, the biggest of its kind in the world. We were left breathless by the shear volume of fish and the hustle and bustle of the crowds. Afterwards we went to the 45th floor of the Metropolitan Government Buildings for stunning views of the cityscape. We finished our day with a relaxing walk around the Imperial Palace and gardens, and a tour of the Sony centre where we played with the latest tech including 3D TV.
On sunday we took a more laid back walk around Ueno Park and the adjacent Ameyoko market. The park was a treasure trove of traditional shrines and temples, which provided a humbling experience as we participated in the traditional rituals. The day ended with a tour of the Tokyo National Museum to learn about the history of Japanese culture.
Our last day in Tokyo was spent looking around the old town of Asakusa with its bustling market shops. It is also home to the Sensoji temple; the oldest temple in Tokyo dating back to 628 AD. We read our fortunes by choosing Omikuji papers, which can be found at the shrines... Liz's was good and Dale's was not so good!
Off to Hong Kong now, will update you soon
