HOWDY!!! (Sorry can't remember how to say HI in Dutch haha)
OK so first thing first we apologise that we are running so far behind on our blog updates, for those of you who don't know we are exactly a week behind now (we were in Amsterdam last weekend) and we have sinced traveled quite extensively.
Back to the blog, so we arrived in "The Dam" (as all the cool kids call it) and were pleasently suprised to be given a "complimentary upgrade" at our hostel from a dormitory to a private room. We were sooooo excited, thinking could this get any better! But as they say with great expectations comes great disappointment haha. After climbing 6 flights of narrow staircases with our heavy packs on we got to the top floor and our private room/shoebox. Now when we say shoebox we arent kidding, the room had a bunk bed in it and the small amount of floor space that we were lucky enough to have was not large enough for the two of us to stand in at the same time with our packs on haha. It was basically like they had taken a cupboard and put some bunk beds in there haha. Don't worry we have photographic evidence to prove how miniscule the room actually was. Also, the room had another random door that was locked which was kind of freaky and left us wondering what lay behind it (don't worry we were soon to find out what lay behind the mystery door). Laughing off our unfortunate situation we decided to head out on the town as it was a Friday night and we were in The Dam!!
Our hostel was in a great location lucky enough so we only walked just around the corner to this awesome restaurant/sports bar/80's disco funkhouse. It was basically heaven on earth! (if you are reading our blogs JB, which I know you secretly are, we thought of you as we sat in this place and both agreed that this was your promised land and you MUST visit this bar, it was made for you!!)
Why so awesome I hear you all wondering....well:
- 10 euro for 10 jager shots, which we shared over our delicious meal
- Nachos, hot dogs, unlimtied spare ribs...
- Big screen TV's playing many different sports
- Wicked tunes, evreything from MJ to A-ha, Cyndi Lauper and Bon Jovi
Need we say more? haha
After having to break off our beloved affair with the sports bar we waltzed randomly up and down the streets of The Dam, jumping from bar to bar, consuming shot after shot, hanging with random Italian's, until the early hours of the morning.
The next morning started off EARLY...with sufficently sore heads haha! So if you have been reading this blog entry with great absorption you would recall that there was a random door in our cupboard/shoe/private room. Well this is how we found out what lay behind the mystery door, and believe me it wasnt like a gameshow where the mystery door revealed some sexy models drapped over a sports car (i know what you're thinking, DAMN yeah haha!). At 8am we woke to a BANG BANG BANG at the door, followed by "hello, im sorry I must check the hot water", and without pause a key entered the keyhole and the door shot open. The receptionist apologetically exclaimed that he had to fix the hot water, while continually reassuring us that this has never happened before (yeah right!). For the next hour we became best mates with the receptionist as he ventured in and out of our cupboard at least half a dozen times.
Following the great start to the morning we thought to head out and get some breaky...somthing greasy was in order. Chloe dug into a big English Breaky and Adam enjoyed a traditional dutch pancake filled with cheddar cheese and ham mmmmmmmm delicious! With the day young and our feet ready for walking we made our way to the Heineken Museum. We thought the entry was a little steep when we first arrived BUT soon found out that the HM (as all the cool kids call it) has sooooo much to offfer and the entry was totally worth it. We spent the following few hours learning how they make Heineken, watching old TV commercials, acting in our very own Dutch dance video, brewing our own beer and of course sampling the wonderful golden beverage served at 0 degrees centigrade that they refer to in The Dam as Heineken!
After sampling a few samples we were in great spirits and decided to make the EPIC hike from the HM to the city centre. So we kind of went the looooong way there, stopping continually along the way to look at shops, watch crazy Dutch fans get excited over beach volleyball (lame!) and observing all the silly people all around us who were sampling the devils grass. We were pretty much wrecked from all the walking and opted to go for a laydown back at the hostel in that hope that our little feet could handle another walking session later that evening to the Red Light District (or as all the cool local kids call it the RLD).
After a short break we were re-charged and ready to rock'n'roll! On our way to a highly recommended eatery we strolled through the RLD to see what all the fuss was about. Now we know there is a good chance that minor's will be reading this blog so we don't want to mentally scar them forever, so we will simply say that the RLD was an experience. It was creepy and there was something there for every gentleman's facination.
We left the RLD shortly after and made a beeline for this eatery on the outskirts of the RLD. This cafe served the most delicious homemade meatballs and mash, which was followed by some more delcious Heineken. Saturday night was not as late as our first night, and we retired to our shoebox at a far more reasonable hour.
On Sunday morning we weren't rudely awoken by hotel management but instead Adam's very annoying iPhone alarm. With an afternoon train to catch to the German town of Dusseldorf we had quite a bit to do/see still in The Dam. After a quick breaky we headed over to Anne Frank's House. The line which everyone told us moves soooo quickly actually did not move that quickly as unfortunatly many other tourists had the same thinking as us that everyone would be too hungover to get to the Anne Frank House early on a Sunday morning....WRONG! The wait was worth it though, the Anne Frank House was by far one of the coolest attractions we had ventured to on the trip so far, it was really well set up/organised and very well maintained considering no-one had occupied the house since just after the end of the second World War. Anne Frank, although only a young girl has truely had an impact on the lives of many many people all around the world. It was a moving experience.
Quite hungry we decided to head to get a bite to eat, satisfying our hunger with some tasty noodles and traditional Dutch Pommes Frities. Chloe also picked up some doughnuts to make sure we had enough snacks for our jounery to Deutschland. And for once we were actually on time for our train, hip hip hooray!!!
Sorry for the epic-ness of this blog entry, lots to recall from our time spent in The Dam! And so ends another enthralling entry to the blog of two young Aussies traveling the globe, one country at a time. Stay tuned for the next update featuring experiences in Dusseldorf and Berlin.
Peace out blogscribers! Lots of love from Neyman and Chlogirl!!
