Four days in, although it feels a lot longer. Two nights ago we ventured out to a bar called ´Black magic" and had a few drinks and played a drinking card game. I found so much about all the other volunteers during the Í have never´part of the drinking game.
Yesterday, I felt ill. I had to spend the day in bed whilst the others went on a visit to Wari and Quinoa. By all accounts it sound like ´they had fun. Hopefully I´ll get the opportunity to go with some new volunteers.
On the first day here, we took a tour of the village and went up to one of the highest points, marked with a big cross. There are lots of churches and religious notations here in Ayachucho. The panoramic view at that point was breath taking. Ayacucho is so beautiful with is avid mix of dust, mountains, brown, golds and green. We already learnt so much about the culture. Nearly 87% of the people in Ayacucho live under the poverty line. However, this is a city rich in agricultural resources and in particular cocaine exportation. The coca leaves grow in abudance in the coca valleys (the jungle) and around 40% of people here are involved in the drug trade one way or another. It sad but that´s one of the only means of survival for these people and many believe that the government in corrupt. Most of the women in the prison that some of the volunteers work in are in there for drug trafficing. Victims of poverty!
