I have had one week of teaching in school in a Kanjar village now.
It is quite challenging but I really do enjoy it. The kids are great to be with and its good to get to know them and their families, and show we accept and care for them.
I am staying with 4 other volunteers from different countries and working with another dirl in a small village called Jharel around 30mins by local bus from where we live.
We are teaching very basic English - alphabet & numbers - with the aim of sending them to the local government school, which we are sending around 8 at the moment.
Then in the afternoons we spend a bit of time with the locals, trying to speak Hindi.. and having small meetings with the women with one of the workers. And just playing with the kids. Its all up to us what we do - there is so much to be done! But everything in India is made difficult so its good in developing persistance & patience!
In out time off we watch Bollywood movies, we went to the local fair (I went on a crazy Indain superfast ferris wheel that sounded like it would fall apart!) and last weekend we all went to Udaipur (a beautiful lake city with a huge old palace).
I'm really enjoying the food that our lovely cook (Saroji) makes for us. Not at all like the Indian food we get at home. The dhal is wonderful & its all vegetarian. Lots of carbs - chappati (like Turkish bread) and rice with lunh & dinner. But the flavours are like nothing else - amazing!
Sorry i cant put any photos up - I'll keep trying but it doesnt seem to want to right now...
