Family, friends and other followers I have a bit of sad news! The days of Milky Madness have officially come to an end for this part of my journey. I finished up as The Milkman last tueday to start a new job last wednesday. My new job involves working in a call centre in Queenstown trying to get Aussies to sign up for funeral insurance. I'm kind of a salesman again although this time I'm not exactly selling anything. I am calling people in Australia and trying to get them to agree to be called by an insurance broker who will tell them about their funeral insurance products. Its not the most glamerous of jobs but it pays the bills, allows me to stay in Queenstown thus preventing me going back to the shaky depressing city that is Christchurch.
It is now monday afternoon and I am due to head to work at 530 for my fourth day of work in the call centre. This place hires new people every few days as most people can't hack the telesales. It is pretty tough as you sit at a desk and call over 400 people in 5 hour period. I did pretty well on my first three days of the new job last week. I managed to get 10 sales which is very good for someone just starting. The telesales doesn't bother me much and plus its only for another month as were due to head to the north island for the world cup in early september. Plus the best part of the job are its hours. I start work monday to friday at 530 and finish at 12. This allows me to both ski and head out as much as I want and can afford. The team I'm working with are all pretty cool too, all backpackers. The pay is good too. I'm earing a base of $450 each week with commission of as much as $350 if I start hitting 9 sales a day which will be tough but doable!
Thats pretty much it on the job front. Other than that the other big news I have is that I visited the most beautiful place in New Zealand yesterday. On satruday the five of us drove to Gunns camp in the Fiordlands. We hiked up a trail for the day that involved a mix of rain forrest, waterfalls, rivers and hiking through heavy snow before eventually arriving at a stunning frozen lake at the top of a mountain. It took around 2 hours to get to the lake. Three of the lads had the silly idea of skinny dipping in the frozen lake! Absolute stupidity in my opinion. The lake was so froze over that they had to crack the ice so as they could sit their buttocks into the freezing water. I might do a lot of crazy mad things but self inflicted castration is one that did not appeal to me in the slightest! Thankfully the route back down was not as challenging and took a little less time. Once we got back to our little wooden cabin in the camp we made ourselves at home by lighting up a gif fire and grabbing a hot shower. That night we watched the NZ OZ game with the owners of the camp in theri living room. It was a loverly chilled night and made a good change from life in the fast lane here in Queenstown.
Sunday morning we were woken by the owner of the camp to be informed that we would not be able to drve to milford sound for another few hours as the pass was closed due to all the snow. Luckily we eventually got on the road around ten once the pass had been cleared. We made it Milford Sound around 1130 and our curise began at 1230. It was the most spectacular three hours that I have ever spent on the water. The views were undescibable! Snow capped cliffs on mountains towered over us on either side of the sound reaching heights of almost 1500m. Some of the cliffs rose directly out the water reaching monstrous heights of 700m thus dwarfing the Cliffs of Moher. The water was the an amasing dark blue colour. There was waterfalls of all shapes and sized crahing into the sound with waterfalls often being created by them. We went all the way out to the entracne of the harbour and back in again. At one stage the driver of the cruiser place of the nose of the boat under a water fall soaking everybody on the deck. Getting soaked by this waterfall is meant to knock years off your life so of course I was one of the many on top deck getting wet and cold but loving it at the same time! By the time the cruise was finished the five of us were breathtaken an realised that this was one part of all our journeys that we would nver forget!
This coming weekend were planning on heading to the Catalans for a surf trip. Really looking forward to that as I have never gone this long without surfing in 7 years. This week I have nothing big planned but you nver know what might happen. All going well I'll have a few more good tales to share soon. Plus if any of ye reading this wish me to go into further detail on any of my experiences or have any questions please comment and I'll do my best to answer. Thats if for now, peace and love all!
