Guano... And lots of it! The Ballestas Islands are a group of small islands near the town of Paracas on the south coast of Peru. The islands are an important sanctuary for marine life like the blue-footed booby (hehe) and the tendril. Other incredible sightings included Humboldt Penguins, fur seals and sealions (literally hundreds) all jostling for position on the rocks and shingle beaches, making an incredible chorus of barks and grunts. The stench was pretty bad but the unique feeling of being in a documentary and seeing the amazing wildlife at such close quarters more than made up for it!
On the way to the islands we passed the Paracas Peninsula, where we saw the massive geoglyfh called El Candelabro that apparently once served as a beacon to mariners.
