Last night was truly amazing and it didn't end until this morning. Take 15000 party goers, cover them in neon paint, give them alcohol, throw in a few mushroom shakes, put them on a beach in Thailand, turn up the music and you have yourself a Full Moon party!
The night started in our very own chill out area of our resort. Everyone there was dressed in brightly coloured clothing, cool head gear and a lot of neon paint. We didn't have any but were kindly offered some so I painted a butterfly and vines on my leg and arm, then I painted the full moon and southern fairies on Chris's arms. Chris bought us two whiskey and cokes but I was so busy painting he drank them both!
Bella arranged a mini bus for us all which was late of course but that gave us enough time to scoff down a burger and pad Thai. When the bus arrived me and Chris jumped in the front while the rest went in the back. The bus was full but there were still four girls left outside. Chris offered to jump out but I told him to shut up and stay seated. Some how they managed to sqeeze in some where, it wouldn't have supprised us if the driver stuck them on the roof! After five minutes or so of the driver asking for money from someone who hadn't paid, we were on our way. Everyone was very loud and excited in the bus. We both silently stared out at the road trying to imagine what to expect. Half way there Chris asked the driver to stop at a Seven Eleven so he could buy a bottle of cheap whiskey. He bought a large one for 220 bht, that should do us for a while!
My phone started to ring when we were about ten minutes away, it was Stuart. He and his friends were already there and waiting for us. We knew we had reached our destination when our bus was suddenly qued down a small road. All around us the pavements were crammed with stalls selling cheap buckets of alcohol, clothing branded with the full moon logo and there were neon painters ready and waiting to turn their next victim into another disco light. By then it was about 11:30pm, there were so many people out on the streets, some looked as if they had been there all day, they probably had! By luck we spotted Stuart as we drove down the road leading to the entrance to the beach. We jumped out and called to him. I'm really glad we did meet up with them, the night wouldn't have been the same otherwise. After introducing us Stuart took us through the back entrance of a resort that led onto the beach. This way we didn't have to pay the 100 bht entrance fee, which is just another con really. There wasnt any security to stop us but we wouldn't have known to go that way otherwise.
Boom boom boom! We could feel the vibrations of the base coming up from the sand into our feet. As we walked further onto the beach we could see a mass of people at one end where the louder music was playing. The other end was made up of rocks that had a couple of bars built into them. Small rocks had been made into stairways leading up to them. The first bar was Kanagroo Bar, the one at the top was Mushroom Mountain bar (more on that one later ;-D). We all grabbed a couple of beers and buckets from the stalls on the beach, then we made our way over to Kangaroo bar.
As we climbed up the stairs I could feel the excitement building up in me, I was ready to party. We all stayed close together so not to lose anyone. We weaved in and out of the crowded bar looking for a spot to settle in. Suddenly Chris stopped and grabbed me by the arm. He pointed at a girl standing by a wall with a guy. I won't tell you exactly what they were doing but what I will say is that the girl must have either been completely out of it or just has no self respect! There were other people sitting and standing right next to them oblivious to what they were doing, it was shocking lol.
We turned back around and realised the others had disappeared. We had only been there two minutes and already we had lost them. We paced up and down the bar a couple of times. Some guys found it funny to throw a few shapes in my face, I looked into their eyes and could clearly see they were off their nut. I called Stuart in the end, was a bit pointless though, we were both shouting down the phone but couldn't make out what the other one was saying so I text him instead. He text me back straight away, they were in Mushroom Mountain bar so we headed up the stairs. On our way up we passed two girls on the rocks laying on their backs staring into space. I caught their eyes dancing from left to right, they were also off their nut lol.
Once inside the bar we quickly found everyone. The name of the bar says it all, it wasn't long before me and Chris decided we would share a small mushroom shake for an expensive 500 bht. It would be the first time for both of us. I walked over to the bar feeling a little nervous about the shakes and what it would feel like. A couple of people asked me if I had done mushrooms before, it seemed no one at the bar had ever done them which surprised me.
The shake didn't taste very nice, i thought it tasted earthy, and it was grey in colour. Chris thought it was ok but then again he would. We gobbled it down together, I finished off the last two gulps which made me heave. Then it was time to wait and just see what would happen next. I was told it would take effect after at least thirty minutes.
The next bar we went to was called FUBAR, i'll let you work it out. This bar was down a side street near the middle of the beach. We stayed here for a good few hours. It was on the way there that I actually started to feel the effects of the shake. I suddenly felt giddy and happy, like a wave of self consciousness had come over me. Chris didn't feel anything. It didn't last long, the feeling went and I was back to myself again. For the next hour or so I experienced the same feeling in waves, each time was stronger than the last. Me and Chris sat in a comfy area of big cushions drinking our whiskey bucket and watched the others on the dance floor. I knew this type of scene wasn't what Chris was used to but he loved it. We danced a bit then chilled again, Chris still didn't feel anything from the shake. I'm pretty sure I had the majority of the mushrooms from the last two gulps. My pupils were really dilated and I could feel a tingling in my face. The feeling wasn't too strong which was nice, I didn't hallucinate but I did hear my voice echo in my head at one point, that was weird! I also thought I tripped out when Chris asked me to look behind me. There was a woman sitting there that looked as if she had died and was already beginning to decompose! Even a dog kept sniffing around her as if waiting for her to die so he could have a bite of her! lol.
Back on the beach we walked up and down for a bit, dancing to the different tunes that were blaring out from each bar. There was a real mixture from house and drum and bass to trance and electro. We passed amazingly talented fire dancers. I took a moment and looked out at all the people standing and squatting in the sea to pee. For some reason I found this hilarious, must have been the shake again. Some people were laying in the sea while others were taking a piss right next to them! I looked back on the beach and noticed the amount of people that were passed out on the sand. I had heard that a lot of people come to the island to party and sleep on the beach and now I know it's true. There was less than two meters between the sleeping groups. That's how cramped it was.
After a while we all decided on one of the really loud bars. The Cactus Bar playing house. People were dancing on the tables, jumping up and down on a huge platform set at least two meters up from the sand. Everyone was enjoying themselves, singing (shouting) along to the tunes, it was brilliant!
Some of the guys wanted to go back to the Mushroom Mountain bar so we all went together. I didn't have anymore, one it was too expensive and two I was enjoying what i felt already. Chris had at least another cup full from the large bucket but he still never felt anything.
On our way back up the beach we came across a young blonde girl being dragged by a French guy. Chris was concerned so offered to help. At first the guy wasn't interested which made Chris even more concerned. The girl was clearly out of it and couldn't stand so Chris picked her up and carried her over to a temporary medical centre. She appeared to have been drugged and needed help. The French guy claimed to know where her friends were but failed to find them then disappeared. When the girl looked up she freaked out at all the guys around her. Terrified she flung her arms around me and buried her head. She was from Sweden and could speak little English. I managed to explain to her that we were going to help her and she could trust me. Wearily she accepted our help and agreed to let Chris carry her to a proper medical centre. Her eyes kept rolling and she kept drifting in and out of consciousness. Once inside the medical centre we tried to get her to be sick but she kept freaking out forgetting where she was and crying out for her friends. Eventually the medical team asked us to leave and we had to sit outside on a bench. We knew we couldn't leave her so Chris, CJ and I promised to stay with her until she was with her friends again or at least in a safe place. Two other guys that noticed us also stayed because they could speak her language, they were a real help. I think the whole episode lasted about two hours. The sun had risen by the time she was reunited with her friends. She had finally been sick and was beginning to perk up. Once we were satisfied that she was safe we went our separate ways and met back up with Stuart and the gang. They were still partying on the beach! It was hot and the beach looked like a dump site full of glass bottles and piles of rubbish. It was sad to see it all floating in the clear blue sea and to think this happens every month. No wonder the Thai's frowned upon us here, but it was a great party :-)
It was around 8am Chris, Tom and Stuart went for a quick swim in the pissy sea, then we were on our way to a hidden after party in the hills. We wern't that impressed when we got there so some of us decided to call it a night, or morning. We grabbed a tuk tuk and headed back to our resort. I slept the whole fourthy five minutes there, waking once and realising more people had got on. I didn't care, I smiled at them and went back to sleep.
When we arived back at the resort we scoffed down a big English breakfast each. Bella laughed her head off at us. (I just realised that Bella's voice is the same as Ting Tong's from Little Brittain! Lol) Feeling knackered we retreated to the comfort of our perfect little bungalow awaiting us high up the steep hill. Urgh! It was sleepy time for us.
