I swear Apollo sent us a dodgy heater on purpose just to annoy us even more. It started making a really loud buzzing noise and didn't stop all night. In the end I had to turn it off because it was too loud and we couldn't sleep. Then as the temperature dropped our camper van heater broke down again! It doesn't seem to work when the temperature drops below -4 degrees which is pretty useless considering at night it always drops to at least -6! I'm already looking forward to the hot weather in Fiji next.
We got up and left the caravan park by 10am. We were planning on driving an hour to Greymouth today but ended up driving all the way to Punakaiki to see some weird rock formations called Pancake Rocks and Blow Holes. Along the way we picked up our first hitchhikers, a couple from France. They were heading to the same place and had been standing by the road for over 2hours! Sod waiting around in the cold weather! They were pleased we were going all the way there. We didn't really talk to them but every now and then I glanced back to make sure they weren't going through our cupboards lol.
Five hours later we reached Punakaiki at 3pm. We dropped the hitchhikers off in town then found a caravan park, no one was there so we drove straight to the Pancake Rocks and Blow Holes. It was a nice walk but we didn't think it was very exciting. The sea had worn away the shoreline creating holes in the cliffs, at high tide the sea squirts through them but unfortunately the tide was low when we got there so we didn't get to see it. The cliffs appeared to look layered like 'Pancakes' hence the name. One area I found interesting was a view looking out at a large area on the cliffs. If you use your imagination you can see faces and other made up creatures in the rocks, a drawn out diagram was displayed to help tourists spot them.
On our way back I heard a strange noise coming from some bushes. I took a look and spotted a bird going crazy, at first I thought it was a large rat! I think the bird was trying to scare us off to protect its eggs, either that or it was just nuts!
It was getting later and we realised we still had to find a place to stay for the night. We decided to wing it tonight and park up in a picnic area on the side of the road. We found a nice spot over looking the sea but there were too many trees and bushes in the way to watch the sun set. So we found a track nearby leading to the beach and sprinted down it. We had to run otherwise we would have missed it! The track ran through a forest and was a lot longer than we thought but we made it just in time. It was a really nice sunset so worth the bit of exercise.
Tomorrow we have a three and a half hour drive to Nelson so have set the alarm for 6am. I'm already not looking forward to getting up so early in the cold. After dinner we put the tv on and snuggled into bed with our hot water bottle and went to sleep.
