We took a 12 hour train journey from Sydney to Melbourne (to be honest after the hike from the day before it was a little bit nice to sit and do nothing). The journey started at 730am, we arrived on the train with our rather heavy backpacks we both look up at the luggage carriage above our heads thinking 'there is no way our backpacks are going to fit up there' at this point a nice young oz fellow assures us that if his bag fitted then ours will 'Phew'. There was then just the struggle of getting our bags up there to which then another nice young british fellow offers to give us a hand, again 'phew' (really shocked he didnt break his back if I am honest).
The journey starts and some of the views were pretty amazing, even saw a croc casually swimming down a stream (if thats what you call them). I am going to admit though after 9 hours the views do get a bit repetitive so plenty of books and ipods were needed for the journey. We finally arrived (after a delay) in Melbourne, we sit and wait for everyone to get off the train so we can try and get our bags down without knocking anyone out. The nice english chap must of heard us as he waited and offered to help us get them down (there are some nice people out there), to which he then asks us where we are from, 'Surrey' we say. 'Whereabouts' he says, 'Camberley' I say 'Do you know it'. 'yes, I went to uni in Farnham', to which my reply ' yes i know it, I applied for the art college but deffered and never went'. What a small world, we come all the way to the other side of the world and still meet people from the same area. Crazy!
So we arrive our hostel, this one is massive, almost like a bit university, and who should be checking in at our hostel... yes helpful british man. To which Karly thought it would be a good idea to tell him that we indeed are not stalking him. Again small world.
We are in an 8 bedroom dorm, there were some very annoying german girls in there who had no consideration for others, thank god they left the next day!Hostel life I guess.
The next day we wake up and its raining, to be honest I think we thought that we would probably like to spend some time here but the reality in the cold light of day was we missed being by the beach. It is just another big city full of tall dark grey buildings...not my idea or Karlys thank god of fun. We did take a walk around the town but were not impressed, we were meeting up with my old childhood friend Eleana who moved out here just before christmas, hoping that she would help us with our 'city life' thoughts. We researched the rest of the day and decided we would do the things we want to do in Melbourne and then move on.
That evening we met up with Eleana who wants to come and join in on our tourist adventures. YAY!So now we have our very own guide around Melbourne. So the plan for the next few days is that we are going to St Kilda on Saturday and then for a night out (Eleana is very kindly putting us up for the weekend) and then Sunday going to Phillip Island to see all the penguins that nest there and then to the Koala Sanctury on Monday. We are then staying in Torquay for the week in a 'homely hostel' to then do the Great Ocean Drive with Eleana on friday. So now we have lots to look forward to again and feel like there is a bit more of an adventure as so far it has felt like a lot of travelling and a lot of city centres. Plus we will be back near the beach next week. Hoorah!
After we complete these adventures we will be heading to Perth to look for some work on the farms. The adventure continues.....
