This weekend was ROADTRIP weekend!!! We travelled the Great Ocean Road it is apparently one of the worlds most scenic coastal drives and you see sights like the 12 Apostles, iconic surf breaks, rainfalls and waterfalls.
It was a pretty amazing Roadtrip, thanks to Eleana for driving. So we started off checking out the Kangaroos that swarm a golf course in Angelsea. We did trespass to get some pictures but it was crazy to see all these Kangaroos just lounging around the golf course with not a care in the world. Reminds me of when I lived in Saudi and we would go to the golf course with my Dad and it was perfectly normal for a camel to just stroll along the fairway.
We saw some pretty amazing beaches along the way and it was odd to suddenly go into country side, mountains and rainforests.
My favourite part had to be as we were driving through Cape Otway abd a canadian girl at our previous hostel had told us if you look really carefully you will see some koalas. So of course as soon as we entered the park we were all on the lookout and Karly was the first to spot one. 'THERES ONE' Eleana slams the brake and I almost go head first through the window...I survived. After the first one was spotted it was pretty easy to spot others and they were all so close to the road and as we ventured more into the woods the Koalas were getting lower and lower. Crazy how they just didnt seem bothered by us at all or the constant clicking of the cameras. I will admit we all got a bit camera snappy. Ele counted all the Koalas we spotted and in total I think it was 43 in the end. Pretty cool considering we thought we would only see 1 if we were lucky.
After we left the koala spotting we decided we were all pretty tired from our first day of road tripping. With all the amazing singing in the car to some of Karlys favourite choons (one direction, she is obsessed) and caffine overdose from energy drinks, we head to our hostel in Apollo Bay. So Eleana has never experianced a hostel so we thought we would be nice and book a rather plush one for her first time (Ease her in), so after following the sat nav we pull up outside this (What words could only be described as) a dump......Eles face drops and I start to panic inside 'This isnt the one that was pictured on the web site.....this can't be it' (inside i am praying to god at this point) then Karly agrees so we continue searching and thank the lord our hostel was just around the corner. We had been warned previousley at our hostel before about one of the places in Apollo Bay about how discusting it is so I am pretty sure that is the one we rocked up outside at. Our hostel was massive, more like a hotel, we had a 4 bed dorm and luckily we had it to ourselves, very lucky. We all decide we need a good drink, Karly remembers that we drove past a bar just outside the hostel so we decide to go there. Its about 8 o'clock and this is a tiny town, we walk to the bar and its shut, GREAT!Luckily for us the lady saw us and invited us in for a 'lock up' drink. Her and her fella run the bar, they themselves have slowly been travelling around OZ. They inform us of the local panthers (great, not only crocs, snakes and spiders now friggin panters) that escaped from a circus or zoo years ago and people still say they have spotted them. They give us lots of helpful hints and tips about where to go including how we shouldnt open our eyes in the lagoon in arlies bay. 'Why' we ask, she then informs us about a chap that ended up getting chlamydia in his eye......HIS EYE!!!!!!!!Apparently this lagoon is close to the bars and people like to fornicate in said lagoon.....I literally wanted to vom in my mouth.....DIS...CUST....ING!!!!!!! Mum and Dad do not fear I shant be going to said lagoon, it will be avoided at allllllllllllllll costs. Felt sorry for the poor chap having to explain that one though. So after hearing the stories we head back to the hostel and get a good nights rest for day number 2.
We wake up and its raining and rather grey....SUPER!Me and Karly didnt get much sleep for some reason, I am sure my bed had bed bugs (just part of the hostel life I guess). Quick pit stop for some much needed coffee and we head off. The bar peeps from the night before had told us about this great choc shop and cheese place that offer free tasting, of course we are all keen so thats where we head to considering its on route. Day 2 was a lot more country side views I found....even though I was looking hard through the rain. We eventually found the choc shop and nibbled on some of the delightful treats. Amazing chocolate by the way. We all treated ourselves to something and then headed off to find the cheese shop. We find the cheese shop....we eat to much cheese.....we feel sick from to much cheese....we leave. Nice cheese though. We are then informed of free ice cream, Ele is sold, we head for the free ice cream. It was in a whiskey distellery, nice little place, didnt feel like any whiskey tasting as it wasnt even lunch time (dont be so shocked), we sample some of the ice cream, salted caramel was rather nice but me and Karly indulged in some cake and tea/coffee instead.Bad move, now we feel even more sick....time to leave.
Back on the road, rain is starting to come down some more, we visit all the 'viewing stations' (basically big platforms for you to take pictures of the views). After all thaat free tasting and lack of sleep I think we were all feeling a bit done for and the weather didnt help. We did find Logans beach which is known for its whale spotting, sadly we didnt see any even though it is the right season :-( oh well. So we went as far as we could and decided to make the drive back and towards the 12 Apostiles. We find the 12 Apostiles, and the Arch and whats left of Londons Bridge......if I am honest.....all just looks like a bunch of big rocks in the ocean....sorry. By this point aswell we are almost getting blown up into the air as the wind is stupidly strong and taking pictures is proving difficult but we did it so at least we can say 'Been there, done that'.
We saty at the same hostel again in Apollo bay, got no sleep due to the MASSIVE gail of a storm happening outside, the great ocean road is closed the next day so we have to take another route home. Me and Karly have to go back to central Melbourne as that is where we are catching our flight to Perth, we were hoping to go to Adelaide but there was no way of getting to Adelaide from Warrnambool (mucked up our plans) and it worked out cheaper to catch a flight from Melbourne.
Great weekend all round though. Much fun!
