Day 7
Was a really tough day today. Left Aubusson shortly after 9am and the going was good for the first 10 miles, probably something to do with the road first running alongside the river, and then a railway track. After that, it got hard! The hills were absolute killers, long, slow gradients that just seemed to go on forever. Did have a funny moment on one of them though, when 'Running Up That Hill' came on completely randomly, like
to think Em may have had something to do with that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SGNtFlskD8&feature=youtube_gdata_player). Then it was down to Ussel, and I had lunch the other side of the town sat on the verge by the roadside.
Think I may have finally got the saddle in the correct position, as my left knee no longer hurts as much as it was. My right knee is still hurting, but I'm used to it, as it has always been a weak point.
Made an awesome descent down parallel to the Dordogne, despite road works, it was a lovely cycle. The descent did go on for ages, which could only mean one thing, a big ascent on the other side (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gIXOgvfzUU) I've come around to the idea that there are similarities between cycling and personal savings / withdrawals. Every hill you climb you are making a deposit into your savings account, safe in the knowledge you have gained altitude ready to be cashed in later on a descent. Unfortunately it came the other way around today, as the descent alongside the Dordogne was followed by a long ascent to Mauriac (probably 4-5 miles of uphill).
Once arrived in Mauriac, I managed to get to the local intermarche before 7pm to buy dinner and food for tomorrow. Unknowingly bought a prawn pastry, was not impressed. Again I used my combination of pitiful french and sign language to get the lady on the fish stall to give me a bag of ice for my knees... bliss!
