Well to be quite honest this week has been extremely uneventful to say the least. It pretty much rained the first half of the week…AGAIN! But I can at least say that the last few days have been sunny and warm.
So with all the rain early on in the week we managed to have quite the clean-up in the shop. Chris is a bit of a neat freak when it comes to that sort of thing so there was heaps of rubbish burnt and scrap taken to the dump. Perry was away at the time and was quite pleased to come home to a thoroughly cleaned out shed. I also managed to do some more tiding in the barn and sorted out a better saddle to use which actually has stirrups I can adjust.
The weather took a turn for the better on Thursday and we started working on putting up a fence for Kaleb's sheep. It is a ring-lock fence that will hopefully keep the coyotes out and the sheep in. Perry got Kristy to pick up some steel posts in town to use for the fence instead of wooden ones. But when he looked at the bill and saw that they were $15 each he decided that wooden ones would probably do the job! It is quite the experience hammering wooden posts that are 4 inches wide into the ground by hand. Warren and I were on the pounder together at one point and managed to have a little accident. Not sure whose fault it was but we lifted the pounder a little too high and it came off the top of the post and landed on Warren's head. The pounder is quite heavy (I can't even lift it onto a post by myself) so I'm guessing that it hurt quite a bit!
Now on Thursday night I got a knock on my door from Kristy at about 9.30pm to tell me that we were branding in the morning and starting at 5:30. That's the way things seem to happen around here…with short notice and in a hurry. Anyway we managed to brand, process and load 130 pairs by lunch the next day, which Perry was quite pleased about. It was quite a hectic branding though as we only had about 9 people and 4 of them were roping so I was running 3 needles, people on head catchers were branding and there wasn't much time to catch a break at all!
This week I have also being getting ready for my big trip to Vancouver. I managed to take the van to town and get some new rubber so I would be ready for the drive to Regina. I also squeezed 5 days of clothes into my little backpack and have just been making sure I have everything sorted before leaving. Saturday night I went to a weiner roast at the lake, which is when you put hotdogs on sticks and roast them over the fire. We then had s'mores for dessert, which is a roasted marshmallow and chocolate between two cookies….YUM!!
So I am now sitting at the airport in Regina waiting for my flight to Vancouver. I headed off from the ranch at about 5:15am and am a little tired but none the worst for wear. Regina is about a 2.5 hour drive from Moosomin and my first experience driving in the city. I did freak a little bit, but just the once and think I will get the hang of city driving pretty quick. I think it might have helped if I knew where I was going so on the way out I should be pretty right. Plus I will have a navigator with me so shouldn't run into too much trouble. I am getting quite excited about meeting Candice and just hope we manage to find each other at the airport. She has assured me she will be the one that looks like me so fingers crossed I recognise her!! Am looking forward to checking out Vancouver and can't wait for the Nickelback concert. Am thinking there will be plenty to keep us entertained during our stay.
