We had our last week of volunteering this week. Although we were at a completely different child care centre, so it was like starting the first week all over again whe learning the children's names. Before we came to the new childcare, we were told it was a lot more under privledged than the last place, so expected a tatty, not particularly organised centre. However as we arrived we were surprised to find toys for the children to play with, teaching resources (hand made by the teachers) and a large kitchen area to prepare food! The staff at the new childcare centre were also very helpful and obviously really cared about the children, which was lovely to see.
During the first few days, we made some teaching aids to help the children learn their english alphabet and numbers and then later used them once they were finished. We also helped the children with various activities to improve their writing and drawing skills, which was quite similar to what we did in the previous childcare place.
We were also given the opportunity to learn some thai cooking from our co-ordinator who cooked for us in the last few days. Which we will have to have a go at when we return home, as it was so tasty!
We really enjoyed the last week, and it was lovely to see a new place which has just started to be renevated by the local community and the starfish project, I am sure we will both keep a look out on facebook to see how it looks once all the work has been done to it!
We found our last day very sad leaving the children but because we didnt know them as well, so it was not as bad as the last childcare centre goodbyes!
However thursday evening and friday morning we had to say goodbye to all our co-ordinators and the other volunteers which was so sad! We went round to the office and one of the to ordinators cooked for us! Here we presented them with lots of gifts to say thankyou!
Friday morning we said our final goodbyes then got the train to bangkok, where we stayed for a night until our flights to ko samui in the morning! After arriving in ko samui, we got a ferry across to ko phangan and are now staying at charm beach resort, on a sea front apartment! It is bliss being so close to the sandy white beaches! After full moon party and a few more days on the beach, we plan to leave to head to koh tao for a night on thursday then to koh samui, but we shall keep you all updated on our travel plans!
