Left our bush camp relatively early for us (9:00am)
Had a thoroughly enjoyable drive across the most barren section of the Nullarbor.
Our day was punctuated with several short detours to quite spectacular vantage points that provide amazing views of the Great Australian Bight. Some of the cliffs are vertical drops of 100s of feet and continue into the distance for as far as the eye can see. Needless to say progress was slow with so many stop offs, but they were all worth the effort. One such stop resulted in Hanno deciding further investigation was required. The steep cliffs of previous lookouts had turned into a less steep decline across rugged terrain down to what appeared to be a sandy beach.
Considerable "discussion" resulted in the donning of hiking boots etc and a 15 minute trek down rocky and sometimes "hairy" tracks to what must surely be one of the least visited beaches in Australia.
On arrival at the beach we were confronted with a sheer drop of about 4 or so metres down a rock face that saw Carol, Stelleen and Hanno risk life and limb to reach the sand, while I "courageously" decided to stay a top and act as tour photographer. Turns out this secluded beach was an ideal repository for anything discarded by passing vessels. Nets, buckets, buoys, thongs, rope and numerous planks of wood had been washed on to the beach over the years and with such difficult access, the items that littered the beach remained where they had been washed up. The climb back to the car park proved less "hairy" but some what more exhausting. At least for the delegated photographer.
After successfully passing through the most rigorous of quarantine checkpoints at the WA border, we passed through increasingly vegetated country side until reaching our resting point on a rarely used track, heading towards another communications tower, some 500km from last night's bush camp.
The night was a classic example of how tough we modern grey nomads are doing it. Beyond all radio and telephone coverage we pulled up a couple of kilometres off the highway and still 5 or 600km from Kalgoolie. Literally in the middle of no where we turned on the automatic satellite dish that gave us live action from Geelong Stadium and to top it off Carol and I made our way over to the Hannan's van for a hot shower.
A couple of quiet beers and despite a disappointing Crows loss, we thanked our lucky stars for being able to do this trip in this level of comfort. So far so good and only 2465km to Exmouth.
