We survived our first sleeper train experience, luckily it was the shortest of our three in China at only 11 hours!!! The set up is you have six people in each compartment with three bunks stacked up on each side, it certainly makes a very intimate train ride especially with 6 large rucksacks as well. After having a slightly dodgy tummy half an hour before we boarded the train I was slightly apprehensive, but luckily I was ok.
We arrived in Xi'an and it was rather smoggy so you could not really appreciate much on our orientation walk, but we enjoyed a fantastic royal lunch with lots of different types of dumplings and a delicious dessert which was sweet potato covered in melted sugar. Which of course we followed with a one and a half hour bike ride along the city wall. Pete chose one of the smallest bikes available so halfway round I had to swap because I had an adjustable seat, let's just say Pete's bike was even too small for me. I really wouldn't want to be doing the London to Cambridge on one of these bikes as they had no gears, squeaked a lot, one of the groups bike's handle bar fell off after five minutes and another guys peddle came off half way round. So even though it was cold and raining we laughed most of the way.
We are heading out tonight to see the biggest musical fountain in Asia, so when we can we will let you know how it went and hopefully have some more pics for you.
